Full Job Description

At Sumter Maintenance, operates small equipment on the asphalt crew such as a 5 yard dump truck, an 8 yard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Operates small equipment such as 4 ton roller, self propel sweeper, and asphalt kettle during various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists with traffic control operations for work zones to include flagging traffic during road repairs to control the flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pile, rake, and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools such as leaf blower, chain saw, power drills, etc in various phases of roadway maintenance. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow and sand spreader attachment to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists with other emergencies as needed.

Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Additional Information

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
