Full Job Description

Operates combination front-end loader and backhoe to clean out drainage ditches and to install sideline and cross line pipes. Assists with repairs and/or installation of drainage structures, shoulder repairs, slope repairs and cleaning and grading of ditches. Serves as crew leader of a maintenance crew. Performs various duties including manual labor or operating equipment in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right-of-ways, cleaning and regrading drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, laying pipes, building catch basins and pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks, and raised medians. Assists the foreman in setting up work zone traffic control to include signs, cones, etc. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Operates 5 and 10 yard wheel tandem dump truck hauling various materials used on maintenance projects. Operates truck with trailer in transporting heavy motorized equipment to jobsites. Assists with training skilled and semi-skilled highway maintenance workers in the maintenance and operation of various equipment, vehicles, hand tools and power tools utilized in maintenance activities. Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety and when working with hazardous materials and waste. Reviews job site hazards with crew members. Produces daily records of work performed and materials used; records data/work accomplishments in Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS). Ensures that equipment is maintained according to SCDOT Guidelines. Assumes foreman's duties and responsibilities during his/her absence. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Employee must be able to work outside and in inclement weather. Employee must be able to lift 100 lbs. Employee must be able to stand, bend, stoop, reach, twist, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, push, pull, grasp and physically manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Works overtime as necessary.
