Job Description

Summary

This job involves hands-on work maintaining and repairing state highways and bridges, including operating medium-sized equipment like dump trucks and rollers for tasks such as patching roads, clearing ditches, and managing vegetation.

Full Job Description

Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium equipment such as, but not limited to, Injection Patcher, Trailer Mounted, Large Roller >4 Tons, and Tandem Dump Truck in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include patching operations, Driveway installation and repairs; performs work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, pavement markings, etc. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as complex mowers and powered hand tools. Maintains working knowledge and practices of Work Zone safety in accordance with the MUTCD manual. Flags traffic in low and high volume areas to control flow of traffic for protection of workers, equipment and general public during maintenance operations. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices in accordance with the MUTCD manual. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department’s most current rules, policies, and procedures according to fleet safety. Operates small equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience. Relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.


The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
