Full Job Description

At Sumter Maintenance, operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck and large steel wheel roller in perfomring asphalt pavement repairs and maintenance such as full-depth patching, leveling, pothole repair and driveway installation. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger when needed to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium equipment such as skid steer loader in the installation and repair of various pipes usded for cross-line and driveways. Operates small equipment to include 5 to 10 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris, and pneumatic roller for various phases of roadway maintenance on the asphalt crew. Assists to operate heavy equipment such as backhoe, front end loader, and asphalt distributor. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists with other emergencies as needed.

Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Additional Information

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
