The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2 in Bellevue, WA.

This position is responsible for performing journey-level inspection, troubleshooting, diagnoses, service, and making major and minor mechanical repairs on all types of equipment used in highway maintenance.

Northwest Region (NWR) Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) provides well maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner.

The primary function of this position is to perform all aspects of Preventative Maintenance (PM) and repair duties on all inventoried equipment within the NWR’s area of responsibility.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Heavy Diesel Mechanic will:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and make needed repairs to equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair computer-controlled systems, including fuel systems, steering and suspension systems, hydraulic and airbrake systems, traction control devises, and heating and cooling systems.
  • Design, diagnose, repair, and install hydraulic systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on a wide variety of WSDNT equipment and vehicles; perform PM to detect and repair safety items on equipment.
  • Perform seasonal checkups, steam cleaning, washing, and major/minor tune-ups and adjustments.
  • Operate computer to maintain M-5 work orders, as well as the initiate work orders and order parts.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Education & Foundational Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to apply foundational mechanical principles and procedures.
  • Preventative Maintenance & Repair Competency: Proven capability to perform preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on equipment.
  • Heavy-Duty Equipment Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency performing independent diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on complex or heavy-duty equipment.
  • Recognized Trade Proficiency: Attainment of journey-level standing in heavy equipment, industrial, or commercial mechanics demonstrated through completion of a recognized apprenticeship program or formal recognition by a trade labor union.
  • Equipment & Tool Operation Skills: Ability to safely and effectively operate a range of mechanical and diagnostic tools and shop equipment such as welders, drill presses, grinders, hydraulic presses, hoists, air and power tools, forklifts, computerized diagnostic systems, hand tools, and jacks to complete repairs and maintain equipment to required standards.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with “N” and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction, AND DOT Medical Certification within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to traverse slopes and declines.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Licensing and Certification: Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with “N” and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction and DOT medical certification to operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Specialized Mechanical Expertise: Proven application of advanced diagnostic and repair skills supported by professional certifications (e.g., ASE) in automotive or truck systems, as well as hands-on experience in fabrication, welding, and/or hydraulic system maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional 10% legislative approved assignment pay is included in the salary listed.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
