Full Job Description

SPU is seeking experienced Heavy Truck Drivers for its Solid Waste Division South Transfer Station.

The successful candidates will operate truck/trailer, tractor/trailer combination or four-axle truck to haul materials or equipment to assigned destinations.

The position will report to a Solid Waste Operations Crew Chief.

Requirements

  • Drive an 8-axle tractor/trailer combination to haul materials to assigned destinations.
  • Drive variety of trucks include heavy dump trucks (in excess of 10,000 GVW) with pup, tilt, roll-off truck, walking trailers, low boy trailers, electric and gas-powered yard goat etc.
  • Ensure safety regulations are observed during the loading, transporting, and unloading of materials.

    Inspect trucks and equipment for defects; perform routine general maintenance; and determine the most appropriate guidelines to follow, such as operating procedures and safety regulations as they apply to a variety of trucks and equipment.

  • Operate mechanical and hydraulic equipment attached to trucks such as trailers.
  • Perform thorough safety inspection of tractors and trailers prior to operation to ensure safe condition.
  • Participate and provide training to other drivers.
  • Clean equipment and perform minor repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance, mileage, equipment, and related records.
  • Recognize hazardous conditions and follow safety procedures.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Pay Close attention to details.
  • Work with diverse group of people in a team environment.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • One year of experience in the operation of heavy trucks, including multi-axle trucks and truck/trailer or tractor/trailer combinations.
  • Knowledge of City, State, and Federal rules and regulations governing the safe operation of truck/trailer and tractor/trailer combinations.

Experience Equivalency:

  • Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.

License:

  • Commercial Driver's License – Class "A" with the airbrake restriction removed.
  • Valid Medical Certificate.

The Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Required to be on call 24 hours/day to respond to emergencies.
  • Experience operating a heavy haul tractor- trailer combinations, including four-axle truck configurations, on both short-and long-route assignments in city and interstate environments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in tractor-trailer operations require tight maneuvering, strong situational awareness, and safe navigation in congested urban areas.
  • Exemplary safety record with strong commitment to DOT compliance, proper load securement, DVIR accuracy, and safe work practices.
  • The ability to develop and maintain respectful and inclusive working relationships within a multicultural workforce and with the multicultural customers and communities we serve.
  • Heavy equipment operator experiences desired.

Working Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Work weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as needed.
  • Stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Spend long periods of time driving trucks, often in heavy traffic and under adverse weather conditions.
  • Work out of various locations throughout the City.

Pre-Employment/Pre-Placement Requirements:

  • The full salary range for this position is $42.36 - $44.08 per hour.
