Summary

This job involves supporting the daily operations of a WIC clinic, which helps provide nutritional aid to eligible families by handling client intake, eligibility checks, measurements, and outreach events.

The role requires travel between Jackson and Mason counties in West Virginia and involves a lot of public interaction.

This position serves both Jackson and Mason County

Under general supervision, performs professional work at the full-performance level in a support services role to assist the daily operations of the Local Agency WIC Clinic.

The Health and Human Services Aide performs office duties including answering the main WIC telephone lines by the third ring, retrieving and responding to voicemails, utilizing email for communication to and from WIC clients and for internal work to stay abreast of WIC policies and procedures, checking the fax regularly, and preparing outgoing and incoming mail.

Work is governed by federal regulations and state and local policies and procedures.

Establishes and maintains WIC participant records and ensures confidentiality of all records and information. Completes all required screens in the computer system utilized by WIC to gather demographic information, income information to determine eligibility, anthropometric information, health information, eco-social information, makes referrals to other healthcare agencies or community partners as needed, makes appointments and completes other screens related to office and client procedures for the WIC program.

Thoroughly explains the participant agreement in detail including not selling or trading WIC foods and formula and keeping receipts for verification.

Schedules return visits for current clients, schedules class appointments, checks for online education completion from WIC clients, and ensures all clients are scheduled according to processing standards.

Certifies and determines financial eligibility of WIC applicants. Verifies Medicaid enrollment to determine if the applicant is adjunctly eligible. Documents household income. Verifies phone number and selects phone carrier if cell phone is listed.

Informs all clients with children to bring immunization records. Requests immunization records from all clients with children.

Documents if children are up-to-date on immunizations in computer system. Refers for immunizations if children are behind on immunization and documents in the computer accordingly. Verifies immunization status through statewide computer program.

Performs and records height and weight measurements.

Performs and records biochemical measurements, such as hemoglobin.

Participates in outreach activities that promote the WIC program which may include, but are not limited to, health fairs, community baby showers, Toddler Tuesday events, preschool and kindergarten screenings, FRN meetings, back to school events, coordinating activities with community partners, and informing organizations about the WIC program.

Issues WIC food benefits to certified clients.

If qualified for the role of a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, may also provide breastfeeding support to clients.

Orders and maintains medical and office equipment needed for the WIC clinic.

Assists in coverage of office assistants in the six Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department counties when needed.

Public contact and travel are required.

Performs other related duties as needed.

Qualifications

Training: Must be able to pass a written test at the eighth grade level.

Special Requirements for the Division of Health:
Applicant must be certified as a Home Health Aide or must successfully pass the written competency evaluation given by the local agency prior to employment. Certification requires completion of a minimum of 75 hours of training including a minimum 16 hours of practicum. Applicant must possess a current driver's license and availability of a car for continuous use shall be a prerequisite for employment.

Note: For positions designated as Breastfeeding Counselor, WIC, positive past or present breastfeeding experience required.
