Job Description

Summary

This entry-level engineering role with the City of Houston's Public Works department involves reviewing and creating engineering plans, conducting field investigations, and ensuring projects follow city rules and standards.

You'll also interact with the public, attend meetings, and assist team members on various tasks.

Key Requirements

  • No prior experience required
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with City driving policy
  • Ability to perform field investigations, including standing, walking, bending, minor lifting, and navigating hazards
  • Preference for experience in reviewing/preparing engineering plans, reading construction documents, and using CAD/GIS/MS Office software

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSConduct engineering plan review, prepare engineering plan designs, project studies and field investigations to ensure compliance with the Code of ordinances, City of Houston Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM).

Work with customers and citizens on various inquiries including documents submitted for review or questions. Conduct and/or represent HPW at meetings and public outreach events.

Understand and familiar with engineering design software and principles.

Investigate and respond to any inquiries from other City of Houston departments, external agencies, consultants, contractors and public.

Assist other technical work and team members as requested/directed by supervisors and managers. Perform other duties as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable. This position will require standing, walking, bending, minor lifting, climbing stairs, and the ability to perform field investigations and negotiate field hazards.

This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires graduation from an approved curriculum in engineering that is approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers as of satisfactory standing.

OR

Requires graduation from an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education, other than a curriculum approved by the Board and passage of the eight-hour fundamentals of engineering examination prescribed by the Board.

OR

Possession of a valid Engineering-in-Training Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.

EXPERIENCE REQURIEMNTS:
No experience is required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
None.

Qualifications


Preference may be given to applicants who have experience reviewing and preparing engineering design plans, reading construction documents and contracts, and experiences in CAD/GIS/MSOffice software. Preference may be given to applicants with extensive experience in construction and drafting experience.


Valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).


**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
