The Responsibilities of the Forestry Technician:
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled to skilled duties in performance of repairs and maintenance of state forest infrastructure.

Inspects and maintains the state forest road system, trails, barricades, and boundary lines by performing ditching, grading, sloping, shaping, and spreading of dirt and/or aggregate.

Performs activities to include constructing firebreaks, assisting with prescribe burns, wildfire suppression, and other timber stand improvement activities.

Performs minor maintenance work on equipment.

  • Inspects, enhances, and maintains wildlife openings, dove fields, and wildlife habitat by discing, plowing, cultivating, planting, mowing and spreading fertilizer on state forest.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance of state forest infrastructure. Performs building/grounds /construction and maintenance to include repairs to buildings, sheds, docks, signs, etc. Inventories state forest property/tools.
  • Performs administrative record keeping activities. Maintain written and/or electronic records of work performed in compliance with forest certification documents and other agency policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required in support of the SCFC mission and strategic goals.

    Requirements

    • A high school diploma and experience related to the area of employment.
    • Must be able to operate light to heavy mechanized equipment.
    • Must pass the agency's initial physical fitness test that requires a two (2) mile walk carrying a 25lb. pack in 30 minutes or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements.
    • Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.
    • Criminal background check and drug and alcohol test are required.
    • Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must have Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) prior to employment.

      Must complete CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory training within 15 working days of hire then obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 90 working days.

      Additional Information

      • Works a standard weekly schedule, 37.5 hours / 5-day work week, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Job may require weekend work from time to time. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 16 days) on large fire incidents in/out of state.
      • Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb, and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
      • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions.
      • General knowledge of safety practices in performing semi-skilled to skilled trade duties; ability to operate light to heavy mechanized equipment; ability to make emergency and general repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to perform manual labor; ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

        Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, other agencies/entities, and the general public.

        This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace - CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing.

        This position is designated as safety sensitive and essential.
