Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping run fish hatcheries and maintain state lakes in South Carolina to produce and stock freshwater fish while keeping facilities in good shape.

You'll assist with fish care, harvesting, equipment upkeep, and grounds maintenance, often working outdoors in various weather conditions.

It's a great fit for someone with hands-on experience in farming or wildlife who enjoys physical work and doesn't mind travel.

  • High school diploma plus two years of related experience in wildlife, fisheries, or agriculture, or an associate degree in technical sciences
  • Obtain Standard (Core) and Aquatic (Category 5) SC Pesticide Applicator's License within six months of hire

  • Proficiency in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades
  • Experience operating heavy equipment and gooseneck trailers
  • Ability to work in adverse weather, lift heavy objects, and operate in and around water
  • Reliable data collection, entry, and management skills

Full Job Description

This employee will be tasked with assisting in the operation and maintenance of all SCDNR Freshwater Fish Hatcheries and State Lakes to ensure annual freshwater fish production goals are met and facilities are maintained appropriately.

Job Duties Include:
  • Assisting with fish culture and harvest at all SCDNR Freshwater Fish Hatcheries.
  • Carrying out all duties necessary to ensure fish production meets annual production goals as assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator.
  • Working at locations as assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator and Assistant Hatchery Coordinator.
  • Ensuring hatchery grounds, ponds, office, work buildings, residences, and all associated structures are maintained to ensure maximum service, efficiency and aesthetic.
  • Conducting and/or assisting with the maintenance of all SCDNR State Lakes as assigned.
  • Ensuring State Lakes grounds, ponds, dams, boat landings, fishing piers, and associated structures are maintained in a manner that ensures maximum service, efficiency and aesthetic value.
  • Ensuring that all issued equipment is maintained in a state of operational readiness.
  • Assisting the hatchery and state lakes staff with administrative tasks.

Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of related experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.

Standard (Core) and Aquatic (Category 5) SC Pesticide Applicator's License within six (6) months of hire date.

Qualifications

Previous experience in aquaculture, fisheries, or agriculture. Proficiency in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades; proficiency with gooseneck trailers; previous experience operating heavy equipment. Ability to work in the field in adverse weather; safely operate landscaping equipment and power tools; collect, enter and manage data reliably; operate aquaculture equipment; communicate with the public, co-workers, and supervisors; repeatedly lift heavy objects and work comfortably in and around water; Ability to drive long distances. Ability to participate with in-state travel, including some overnight travel.
