Full Job Description

This employee will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance and operation of the Cheraw State Fish Hatchery to meet annual freshwater fish production goals.

Job Duties Include:
  • Following correct protocol in the production, harvest and stocking of fish.
    • This includes: assisting in all daily scheduled routines associated with the husbandry of fish stock on site.
  • Maintaining responsibility for taking corrective measures or notifying a direct supervisor of any existing/potential problems.
  • Following proper protocol in the harvesting and distribution of all fish stock.
  • Assisting in the preparation and management of culture ponds for stocking, rearing, and harvesting of fish.
    • This includes: water level management, vegetation control, fertilization regimes, preparation of catch basins for stocking and harvesting fish.
  • Participating in grounds and equipment maintenance.
  • Working with staff to ensure hatchery grounds and buildings are kept neat and secure.
  • Maintaining responsibility for the upkeep of all Department issued equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Assisting with daily maintenance and upkeep of all fish culture systems and equipment such as feeders, aeration equipment and filters.
  • Completing administrative duties as assigned.

Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.

Qualifications

Ability to efficiently operate and maintain equipment (landscaping equipment, mowers, tractors and vehicles). Proficient with various computer software programs (spreadsheet, data entry, etc.). Basic knowledge in carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades. Ability to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers. Ability to lift heavy objects. Ability to work long hours, work in inclement weather and complete some overnight travel. Ability to swim.
