The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Fairbanks, Alaska!


What you will be doing:

This position is a primary source of public information and public service in the Fairbanks ADF&G Public Information Center, providing customers with information about the area, explaining hunting and trapping regulations, issuing permits and harvest tickets, selling licenses and tags, and collecting and recording harvest reports.

The incumbent seals animals such as bears, furs, and sheep on a regular basis, maintains vehicles and equipment, and classifies, analyses, and summarizes harvest data.

Fieldwork includes responding to nuisance wildlife situations, acting as observer during aerial wildlife surveys, and occasional wildlife capture work.

The working conditions you can expect:

The position is located at the ADF&G office at 1300 College Road in Fairbanks.

The daily work environment involves effective communication and teamwork with office coworkers as well as regular use of a computer while assisting the public in person and over the phone at the information desk or in the laboratory at the Fairbanks office.

Fieldwork is required throughout the season and may involve exposure to animals, biting insects, inclement weather, firearms, low-level aircraft flight, and/or travel by boat or skiff.

Aerial surveys are conducted in small aircraft maneuvering at low altitude for long periods of time in sometimes cold conditions.

  • This position may require field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying in planes and helicopters, travel by boat or skiff, and contact with drugs and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.

Who we are looking for:

The Department of Fish & Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, is recruiting for a Fish & Wildlife Technician 3 stationed in Fairbanks.

This position will serve as a permanent seasonal, full-time technician with the Division of Wildlife Conservation in Fairbanks and will be responsible for working as part of a team in the Regional Wildlife Information Center in Fairbanks.

The Information Center assists people from around the world, answering questions about hunting and trapping regulations, hunting opportunities, hunter education, and wildlife viewing in the region and statewide.

This position provides customer service to the public and assists with providing field and logistical support to research and management biologists throughout Interior and Northeast Alaska.

This is currently a 11-month seasonal position. If additional funding is available the position may be extended beyond 11 months, otherwise the selected applicant will be on seasonal leave without pay.

The position is overtime eligible.

The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provide high-quality customer service to diverse groups by explaining complex hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations, issuing permits and licenses, and interacting professionally with with a wide variety of customers.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of Alaska’s wildlife and habitats by engaging with hunters, trappers, anglers, and wildlife viewers, assisting with human-wildlife interactions, and intervening when necessary to ensure safety and compliance.

    This includes working with animal carcasses or parts during sealing and sampling, as well as handling live animals for trapping, hazing, or humane euthanasia when required, while following all safety protocols.

  3. Accurately record and manage biological data by following established protocols and using computer programs for data entry, analysis, and archiving. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team in office, laboratory, and remote field settings.

Special Note:

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

Certification as a State of Alaska Peace Officer is required to enforce Title 5 Alaska Administrative Code and Title 16 Alaska Statutes regarding hunting, fishing and trapping regulations.

Requirements

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
