Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting buildings and systems for fire risks, teaching fire safety to others, and helping prevent emergencies at a Navy base in Illinois.

It's a hands-on role for someone who likes working with teams to keep people safe from fires.

A good fit would be a detail-oriented person with experience in safety checks or training, who enjoys public education and following safety rules.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-07 level (or equivalent) conducting fire inspections, hazard detection, and training
  • For GS-08: Possession of certifications in HazMat Awareness, Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Instructor I (from DoD, NREMT, IFSAC, or Proboard)
  • Ability to inspect and test fire extinguishing and reporting systems
  • Skills in conducting fire prevention education, demonstrations, and developing training materials
  • Proficiency in preparing inspection reports, violation notices, and using information management systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Experience assisting in fire protection tasks (for GS-07 level entry)

Full Job Description

You will serve as a FIRE PROTECTION INSPECTOR in the FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES of NAVSTA GREAT LAKES IL.

GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: (1) Conducting fire protection and prevention inspections; (2) detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; and (3) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention In addition to the specialized experience listed above, at the GS-08 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: 1) HazMat Awareness; 2) Fire Inspector I; 3) Fire Inspector II; 4) Fire Instructor I; These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, NREMT, IFSAC or Proboard to meet the requirements.

If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible.

  • You will inspect and test a variety of fire extinguishing and reporting systems with some guidance and perform technical inspections of high hazard occupancies and work processes with guidance.
  • You will conduct fire prevention demonstrations, lectures, classes, and displays on topics of fire and life safety independently and develop teaching and learning materials and creates public safety education course curricula.
  • You will prepare written inspection reports and violation notices independently and utilize the fire department's information management system, word processing, spreadsheets, and database software with minimal guidance.
  • You will serve as trainee inspector and provide additional training and experience.
