Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting buildings and facilities at a military base to spot fire risks, ensure safety rules are followed, and recommend fixes to prevent fires.

It also includes reviewing plans for new construction to make sure they're fire-safe.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in fire safety inspections, attention to detail, and the right certifications, who enjoys working in a structured government environment.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-06 level for GS-07 (assisting in fire inspections, identifying hazards, ensuring compliance, recommending corrections)
  • One year of specialized experience at GS-07 level for GS-08 (performing inspections for violations, providing hazardous material expertise, ensuring NFPA compliance, participating in fire investigations)
  • For GS-07: Certifications in Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, and Hazmat Awareness (via DoD, IFSAC, or PRO-Board)
  • For GS-08: Certifications in Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor I, Hazmat Awareness, Airport Firefighter, and EMT (State of Texas or NREMT)
  • No education substitution allowed; must qualify based on experience alone
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Subject to Special Retirement Coverage with possible maximum entry age and mandatory retirement

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is located at Fort Bliss, TX.

This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GS 07- Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: assisting in performing general fire prevention inspections of various types of structures and other installation facilities, identifying fire hazards and conditions for an organization, assisting in ensuring that facilities are in compliance with polices and regulations and identifying unsafe fire hazard conditions to recommend corrective measure to senior leadership This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

GS 08- Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: performing fire protection and prevention inspections for violations of fire regulation; providing technical expertise in hazardous material storage functions ;ensuring that facilities are in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and participating in preliminary investigations into causes of fires by inspecting damaged areas and interviewing witnesses This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the below listed certifications (for their applicable grade) certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

GS 07 Fire Inspector I Fire Inspector II Hazmat Awareness GS 08 Fire Officer I Fire Inspector II Fire Instructor I HAZMAT Awareness Airport Firefighter Emergency Medical Technician - State of Texas OR National Registry (NREMT) Major Duties:

  • Performs weekly fire inspections of areas having a characteristically high fire expectancy.
  • Ensures compliance with prescribed fire prevention regulations, policies and guides concerned with the fire protection and prevention regulations.
  • Initiates action on discrepancies found and conducts follow-up inspections.
  • Reviews plans for new construction and alteration/extension of existing structures.
