Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting Navy facilities in Hawaii for fire safety, conducting investigations into fire causes, and educating people on preventing fires and handling emergencies.

It's a hands-on role focused on keeping installations safe from fire hazards through checks, training, and enforcement.

A good fit would be someone with experience in fire safety inspections, a passion for public education, and the ability to work independently in a military environment.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 (for GS-07) or GS-07 (for GS-08) in fire protection, including assisting with inspections of hazardous areas and testing fire systems
  • Ability to prepare written inspection reports and violation notices
  • For GS-08: Experience interpreting and enforcing fire prevention programs, planning facility inspections, and teaching fire safety procedures
  • For GS-08: Possession of Fire Inspector I and II, Fire Instructor I, Public Fire and Life Safety Educator, and HAZMAT Awareness certifications from DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections, training, and scheduling of lectures and demonstrations
  • Perform primary fire investigations to determine causes
  • Issue permits for high-hazard operations like hot work and identify corrective actions for hazards

GS-07: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting in the technical inspection in areas and facilities with special hazards; 2) Inspecting and testing a variety of fire extinguishing and reporting systems with some guidance; and 3) Preparing written inspection reports and violations notices for review.

GS-08: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Interpreting and facilitating an effective and comprehensive formal fire prevention services program, through inspections, training, contact with officials and enforcement of fire regulations; 2) Planning directing and facilitating all functional aspects of fixed facility inspections; and 3) Teaching home prevention and emergency procedures.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (GS-08): For the GS-08 the incumbent must possess the following certifications: Fire Inspector I and II; Fire Instructor I; Public Fire and Life Safety Educator; and HAZMAT Awareness.

These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement.

  • You will perform fire prevention functions that include inspections, training, scheduling including formal lectures and practical demonstrations.
  • You will conduct primary fire investigations for cause and determination on installations.
  • You will issue permits for hot work and high hazard type of operations.
  • You will identify hazardous conditions or practices to determine appropriate corrective action.
