About the Division:

Seattle Parks and Facility Maintenance Division performs maintenance at over 25 miles of boulevards, 465 parks, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small-craft centers, 4 golf courses, and an outdoor stadium.

We place strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients, and staff to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.


Position Description:

Seattle Parks and Recreation is seeking a qualified candidate to join our Recreation Equip Crew as the fencing facilities maintenance worker.

Positions in this class inspect, maintain, and repair fencing systems, gates, posts, and related structural components associated with secured facilities, parks, and public infrastructure.

This includes performing routine upkeep, minor repairs, and adjustments to ensure the integrity, safety, and functionality of fencing installations.

Positions in this class may perform non-journey-level work across a variety of trades, particularly those related to construction, carpentry, and grounds maintenance.


This class is distinguished from the trade’s classes in that the Facilities Maintenance Worker does not perform work that requires a journey-level license in any trade.

The Facilities Maintenance Worker may also be the key person assigned to multiple sites to respond to fencing-related emergencies during off-hours, such as storm damage, security breaches, or urgent repairs.


Employees in these roles perform a variety of tasks associated with the ongoing preventive maintenance and routine upkeep of our Parks properties.

The work requires specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a variety of semi-skilled non-journey level trades and maintenance work.

An ideal candidate will also demonstrate the ability to identify ways to improve efficiency in routine and on-demand maintenance and contribute to enhanced customer experience.


We are currently recruiting for one (1) regular, benefited position on the Day Shift

Requirements

  • Determine appropriate locations for fence installations and related operations based on site plans and specifications.
  • Verify alignment and positioning of fencing structures, gates, and components to ensure proper installation and functionality.
  • Measure work site dimensions and mark reference points on materials to guide construction and layout.
  • Dig holes and trenches for fence posts, gate supports, and foundational elements using manual or powered equipment.
  • Position structural components such as posts, rails, and panels according to layout and grade requirements.
  • Mix and pour concrete or other compounds to secure posts, build foundations, or repair damaged areas.
  • Install fencing and barriers, including chain-link, wood, vinyl, and metal systems, ensuring compliance with safety and design standards.
  • Assemble and fasten gates into position using hand tools, ensuring smooth operation and secure locking mechanisms.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications to execute installations and repairs accurately.
  • Break out and remove old concrete or damaged fencing materials as part of site preparation or repair work.
  • Backfill utility cuts and excavations in sidewalks, streets, and landscaped areas; prepare subgrade for concrete placement.
  • Establish line and grade, perform rough and final grading, and build forms for concrete work related to fencing infrastructure.
  • Place reinforcing steel and pour concrete for repairs to retaining walls, curbs, foundations, and other structural elements.
  • Finish concrete surfaces by troweling, sweeping, edging, and marking; install expansion strips per specifications.
  • Order and inventory supplies, parts, and tools needed for fencing and maintenance tasks; maintain organized stock levels.
  • Lead and coordinate the work of Installation Maintenance Workers assigned to fencing or concrete-related projects.
  • Facilitate communication across skilled trades units to ensure timely and efficient completion of job tasks.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests during off-hours, including fence damage, gate malfunctions, or safety hazards at Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities.
  • Work with the Asset Management Work Order (AMWO) system to track, update, and manage maintenance tasks and service requests.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level and type as assigned, supporting the broader goals of the department.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of general maintenance and repair work, including experience in work related to one or more specific trades. (Combinations of experience, training, and education will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.)


Required Qualifications:


License, Certification, and Other Requirements

  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
  • Ability to obtain CPSI Certification, Fall Protection, Competent Person status, Forklift Certification, and Aerial Lift Operator credentials within one year of hire.
  • Two years’ experience in fencing installation and repair, including working with chain-link, wood, vinyl, and metal systems.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, site plans, and construction specifications to guide layout and installation.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, and post-hole diggers.
  • At least one year of concrete work experience, including mixing, pouring, finishing, and form-building for foundations, curbs, and retaining walls.
  • Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
  • At least one year’s experience performing site preparation tasks, such as grading, trenching, and backfilling.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to emergency maintenance situations during off-hours.
  • Experience leading, training, and overseeing the work of subordinates performing a variety of facility maintenance activities and projects.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use standard office software and work order/asset management systems for tasks such as record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
  • Two years’ experience ordering parts and materials and maintaining relevant inventory records.
  • Experience maintaining multiple municipal or large commercial facilities.
  • Experience coordinating work with both internal and external work groups such as skilled trades, contractors, other maintenance groups, etc.
  • Basic understanding of safety regulations and PPE requirements for outdoor construction and maintenance work.
  • Physical ability to perform moderate to heavy labor, including lifting, digging, and working in varied weather conditions.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, especially when leading or assisting other maintenance workers.
  • Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with departmental needs.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather, and tasks may be performed in uneven terrain
  • Work at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • May work near heavy equipment.
  • Required to work near energized equipment.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.

Additional Information

Compensation:

This position is part of the 3-Step Compensation program; The full salary range for this position is $39.18 (Step 1) – $42.22 (Step 3) hourly.
