Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing county buildings in Tacoma, Washington, by handling tasks like carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and basic equipment troubleshooting to keep facilities in good shape for employees and visitors.

It's a hands-on role on a supportive team where you'll learn new skills and provide direct customer service to internal users.

A good fit would be someone enthusiastic about trades work, eager to learn, and comfortable working independently or with experienced technicians.

Key Requirements

  • Perform carpentry tasks for remodels and maintenance, including roofs, walls, doors, windows, and framing

  • Troubleshoot and maintain HVAC equipment, motors, fixtures, and replace lights and ballasts
  • Handle plumbing installations and repairs, including unclogging drains, sinks, and sewer lines

How to be Successful in the Role:

Provide great customer service for our tenants and prioritize work orders while building your knowledge in facilities trades. Have a positive and enthusiastic work presence while working independently and while directly assisting experienced technicians and mechanics on various projects.

Your Future in this Role:

You will receive training and gain experience, including building trades knowledge, safety procedures, building orientation, computer applications, and much more, to help you become an experienced, well-rounded facilities professional.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Performs carpentry work related to facility remodels and building maintenance including but not limited to roofs, walls, doors, windows, cabinets, floors, framing, and siding.
  • Assists with electrical work, such as installation of new breaker panels and power circuits, installation of conduit and wiring from power source to panel box, installation and repair of electric switches, outlets, and interior and exterior wiring.
  • Assists with repair, maintenance and troubleshooting on motors, fixtures, switches, HVAC equipment, and other equipment. Replaces lights and ballasts.
  • Performs plumbing installation and repairs including installation of new systems and repair and unclogging of sewer lines, sinks, showers, and drains.
  • Performs painting assignments including but not limited to using paint brush, roller, and spray equipment, applying stains, varnishes, lacquers, and enamels to a variety of surfaces, preparation of surfaces for painting using scrapers, sand paper, or pressure washer, and filling holes with a variety of products.
  • May perform routine inspection on low-pressure boilers and logs in results.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years work experience in one or more of the building, mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, construction trades or related trades area and provide adequate documentation of such.

  • Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Driver’s license.


Special Note:

  • Certain positions in this class may be required to possess or have the ability to obtain licenses required by the state, local, or federal code or regulations including but not limited to class III boiler operation license and state asbestos worker certification.

  • Peak and prolonged physical effort may be required on a regular basis in some positions of this class.

  • Frequent lifting or carrying objects up to 50 pounds may be required in some positions.

  • Employees are subject to 24-hour on call availability and must be able to work any shift at any location as required.
