Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves operating heavy machinery to maintain forest roads, trails, picnic areas, and handle tasks like snow removal and brush clearing in Pennsylvania's Weiser State Forest District.

In this position, you will be essential in maintaining the district's roads, trails, and facilities through proficient operation of equipment and vehicles. Requirements

In this role, you will demonstrate your skills in operating heavy-duty trucks and equipment to maintain the Weiser State Forest Lands, Buildings, and Picnic Areas via the operation of listed and/or similar equipment, including but not limited to the construction of; shaping, filling, and smoothing road and parking lot surfaces; snow removal as required; clearing brush and debris along the roadways; and installing and maintaining culverts and other road drainage systems.

In addition, the following duties will be an essential part of your position:
  • Locate, investigate, and report on wildfire hazards.

  • Understand and follow rules, regulations and policies relating to fire suppression. Maintain and repair wildfire suppression equipment and tools as needed.

  • Perform assigned duties and serves as crew leader during fire suppression activities when directed.

  • Follow all district policies regarding fire season duties, schedules, and availability during nonstandard work hours.

  • Respond to wildfires as directed and work to control the fire or mop up as assigned.

  • Operate fire control tools and equipment.

  • Inform supervisor of possible fire hazards or dangers.

  • Operate two-way radio.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • This is a seasonal, full-time position with no healthcare benefits. The season runs from approximately March 2026, until November 2026, at which time the employee will be placed on leave without pay. The employee will automatically be returned to employment approximately March 2027.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the air brake restriction removed.
