This job involves finding and marking underground utility lines like water pipes and sewers to prevent damage during digging projects, while also handling paperwork and records for these requests.

Locates underground utilities by marking utility lines and mains using locating equipment and drawing books, reading and interpreting construction drawings, lifting and exposing manhole covers and water valves, inspecting sites, distinguishing departmental utilities from others and reporting all buried boxes for excavation.
Manages utility location request records by sorting tickets from call center, routing records, entering data into computer programs, researching and gathering information for reports, recording information onto log sheets, maintaining summary records, monitoring expiring tickets, sending responses to call center and complying with 48 hour state regulation.
Must be able to distinguish between colors in order to properly color code utilities and determine the presence of other utility marking, perform clerical duties including filing, scheduling meetings, and answering the telephone for customer inquiries, and work closely with others in a team oriented environment.
Requires ability to make legible log entries and rough sketched of utilities and landmarks with dimensions, use Engineer's scale and to measure distances, able to use personal computer for e-mail, web access, data entry and retrieval Must be able to bend, push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds, use pick and shovel: stand, stoop, or walk for extended time periods.
Qualifications Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes.
Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.Six months in drafting, GIS, sub-professional engineering; or a directly related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.The desired candidate will possess experience locating and/or working with underground utilities.

- 3:30 p.m.Work Location: Combined Operations, 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.
This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
