Job Description

Summary

This job involves building, testing, and improving specialized equipment and hardware used to support NASA's missions to the Moon and Mars, working in a hands-on prototype development setting at the Kennedy Space Center.

You'll use skills in machining, welding, and assembly to create complex parts with minimal supervision.

It's a great fit for experienced technicians who enjoy problem-solving in a high-tech environment and have a background in precision manufacturing.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 (for GS-10) or higher, including basic fabrication tasks like machining, welding, sheet-metal, fluid-system, or electrical assembly under supervision
  • Proficiency in using precision measurement tools to verify dimensions and tolerances during fabrication
  • Ability to follow and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, or work instructions for assembling hardware
  • Experience with computer numerical control (CNC) machining, programming, and operation with minimal supervision (for higher grades)
  • Skills in inspecting complex parts, troubleshooting fabrication issues, and collaborating with engineers on prototypes
  • Familiarity with advanced CAD tools for prototype development and process improvements
  • U.S. citizenship (implied for NASA federal positions) and ability to pass background checks

Full Job Description

Serves in a prototype and development environment supporting the fabrication, assembly, testing, and refinement of ground support equipment and spaceflight hardware.

Performs multi-discipline fabrication, including computer numerical control machining, welding, sheet-metal fabrication, fluid-system fabrication, or electrical assembly, to develop hardware that supports NASA's Moon-to-Mars mission.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-10, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service: Performing basic machining, welding, sheet-metal, fluid-system, or electrical fabrication tasks under close supervision.

Using standard precision measurement tools to verify part dimensions while performing fabrication tasks.

Following engineering drawings, computer aided design models, or work instructions to fabricate or assemble basic hardware components.

To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service: Performing computer numerically controlled machining, welding, sheet-metal, fluid-system, or electrical fabrication under normal supervision.

Inspecting parts using measurement tools and making routine adjustments during fabrication to maintain drawing or model tolerances.

Reviewing computer aided design drawings or models to determine fabrication steps or tooling for moderately complex parts or assemblies.

To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service: Programming and operating computer numerically controlled machining equipment, welding, sheet-metal, fluid-system, or electrical fabrication with minimal supervision.

Inspecting complex parts and assemblies using precision measurement tools and adjusting fabrication processes to meet tight tolerances.

Evaluating prototype hardware and collaborating with engineers to determine appropriate fabrication methods, tooling, or integration approaches.

Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience.

Experience statements copied from a position description, vacancy announcement or other reference material constitutes plagiarism and may result in disqualification and losing consideration for the job.

  • Independently plans, fabricates, and integrates complex prototype hardware using computer numerically controlled machining, welding, sheet-metal, fluid-system, or electrical techniques.
  • Develops original fabrication approaches, resolves complex manufacturing issues, and provides expert guidance to engineers on manufacturability and design impacts.
  • Uses advanced computer aided design tools to support prototype development and ensure fabrication accuracy.
  • Leads multi-discipline troubleshooting and implements improvements to fabrication processes and test setups.
  • Conducts advanced testing, fit-checks, and validation of prototype hardware with minimal supervision.
  • Coordinates fabrication activities across multiple disciplines to meet project technical and schedule needs.
