New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.


Student Trainees are students enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university that work part-time during the school year and more hours during their breaks and summer as their schedules allow and their supervisor determines appropriate based on business need.

Some evening and weekend work may also be

required.

About the Work Unit

The Region 4 South Engineering Program monitors, oversees and supervises all aspects of highway construction contracts between CDOT and contractors to ensure conformance with the contract plans and specifications.


About the Position

CDOT has a part-time Student Trainee II role to fill in Boulder with the Region 4 South Engineering Program.

Under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, as a Student Trainee II, you will learn to apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to roadway design and construction projects.

During design, you will learn to assist in the development of roadway construction plans, design details, specifications, and cost estimates for state projects.

During construction, you will learn to assist in the inspection of construction activities to ensure contract compliance and in the preparation of item documentation for monthly estimates.


Your duties and responsibilities will be performed under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer and include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist engineers and engineering technicians with tasks associated with the engineering work of the Residency.
  • Learn to apply current state and federal specifications and standards to project design and construction oversight.
  • Participate in formal and on-the-job training opportunities.
  • Observe engineering staff on design and construction projects, including participating in meetings, on-site inspections, etc.
  • Become familiar with CDOT processes and procedures.
  • Attend and complete all required safety training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • The expected work schedule is between Monday-Friday, with opportunity for a flexible schedule
  • After a training period, you will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work
  • It is anticipated that this role will work approximately 24 to 40 hours per week
  • May work weekends, holidays, and/or nights
  • Must travel to and from construction sites, meetings and training which can include the Denver and Greeley areas
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Current enrollment in an accredited college or university Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. engineering program.

College Transcripts: A legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or a foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts must show the name of the school completed credit hours, and (if applicable) that a degree was conferred.Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. The credential evaluation report must be an official report. Failure to provide a transcript or foreign credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

Conditions of Employment
  • Continued employment as a Student Trainee requires current enrollment in an accredited college or university Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. engineering program.

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

  • Strong attention to technical detail;
  • Being open to change and new information; adapting behavior and work methods in response to changing conditions or unexpected obstacles;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Gmail and Google Applications, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
