This job involves maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex mechanized material handling systems and equipment used in Air Force air terminal facilities, including both mobile and stationary industrial machinery.

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain a variety of Mechanized Material Handling Systems and material handling equipment designed for and installed within Air Mobility Command air terminal facilities.

Tests, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates various types of complex electrically and mechanically controlled industrial equipment, both mobile and stationary.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the TRANSPORTATION/MOBILE EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE GROUP.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an ELECTROMOTIVE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Thorough knowledge of mechanical, electric, and electronic procedures, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and components of a variety of industrial support machinery and equipment and their operating characteristics applicable to installation/repair procedures, methods, and trade practices.

Knowledge of electrical and electronic instruments used in shop and trade practices (e.g.

test lamps, multimeters, circuit analyzers, circuit breaker testers, voltage recording meters, meggers, watt meters, ohmmeters, and ammeters.

Knowledge of safety practices, regulations, and procedures to include environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials.

Skill to use test equipment and measuring devices, such as micrometers, dial indicators, ammeter volt meters, flow meters, and calipers.

Ability to interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, technical manuals, National Electrical code, National Fire codes, local codes, and to use trade formulas to calculate common properties.

Skill in use and application of standard formulas, shop mathematics, trade theories, and industry practices in calculating needed materials and problem solving.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee works in tiring, awkward, or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time.

Frequently stands for long periods of time, bends, stoops, crouches, and crawls under vehicles/equipment. Work is performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of material handling equipment.

Climbing and working in high places may be required. Frequently lifts and carries, unassisted, items weighing up to 40 pounds.

Sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.

Work exposure includes danger from moving parts. Requires close hand and eye coordination, and eyesight with color and depth perception for performing assembly and adjustment tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather and in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy.

May work on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet, or in close quarters such as manholes, machine pits, or attics. Subject to electric shock, cuts, burns and bruises.

May be exposed to temperature extremes in test facilities, extremely high noise levels, and exposure to exhaust fumes, lead, radiation, chemicals, or carcinogens.

To reduce dangers and irritations from these conditions, they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

- Troubleshoots, disassembles, and repairs malfunctions in the electrical systems of material handling equipment to include Elevating/Non-elevating Transport Vehicles (ETV/TV), inventory control system (ICS), Pallet Storage Enclosure (PSE), pallet pit workstations, docks, and associated equipment.

Diagnoses malfunctions and repairs/replaces parts and/or components such as motors, voltage regulators, current relays, sensors, breakers, contactors, switches, controls, and wiring as required.

- Troubleshoots, disassembles, and repairs malfunctions in the mechanical systems of material handling equipment to include ETV/TV, ICS, PSE, pallet pit workstations, docks, and associated equipment.

Adjusts clutches, drive chains, and tension devices. Uses and maintains tools.

Sets up and operates all types of machine tools, material drill presses, precision grinders, welders, and other portable machine tools to perform on-site milling, grinding, boring, facing, and drilling.

- Provides electronic and technical assistance to solve problems encountered during the operation of the MMHS to include ETV/TV, ICS, PSE, pallet pit workstations, docks, and associated equipment.

Uses Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) computer system and ICS for gathering and analyzing real time data used to monitor and control ETVs, conveyors, and associated equipment.

- Performs and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications and work orders.

Refers to electrical schematic diagrams, blueprints, manufacturer manuals, Technical Orders, and regulations for technical instructions and informational purposes.

Uses shop mathematics and handbook formulas in computing dimensions and in planning and laying out work.

- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.

Follows federal and state rules when storing, using, handling, labeling, and disposing of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental standards.

Performs clean-up duties, such as cleaning equipment, sweeping, straightening, and lining up tools and other property in the assigned area.
