Full Job Description

The Electrician Leader serves as a Lead in the Electric Shop under the supervision of the Electrician Supervisor at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center Columbia, South Carolina, Facilities Management Department.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electric Drawings Electrical Equipment Lead or Supervise Technical Practices Technical Practices (Electrical Electronic) Troubleshooting (Electrical) Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major Duties:

Work Experience Leads

Electricians (WG-10) in the electric shop, in this capacity; he/she assigns jobs and duties, as directed by the Electric Shop Supervisor to Electricians in the shop and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Electric Shop Supervisor in their absence.

Maintains the medical centers main switchgear, electrical distribution system, interior and exterior lighting, elevators, transfer switches, emergency, and back-up generators.

Provides maintenance and repair of these times and any minor improvements as needed in these areas, and any other electrical system or equipment to meet the mission of the facility.

Obtains needed information on decisions from the supervisor and relays the decisions to the affected personnel on problems or questions to facilitate the effective accomplishment of work assignments.

Communicates with the other shops to see that needed materials and tools are available and those necessary tasks requiring coordination are being completed in accordance with the supervisors' instructions.

Maintains a current knowledge of the electrical trade and answers questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.

Reviews drawings and specifications for all renovations and new construction projects, making recommended changes as the electrical subject matter expert.

Performs electrical inspections on all new construction and renovation projects.

Required to obtain parts and material quotes for purchasing, building statements of work, as well as overseeing small scale electrical shop projects.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am -3:30pm (work schedule subject to change based on agency need) Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician Leader/PD110120 Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be in good physical condition to perform assigned work.

Physical exertion, such as lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes, is required.

Physical efforts, such as walking, climbing, crawling, and bending, and strains such as working in confining spaces or in crouching or stooping positions for extended periods of time are encountered much of the time.

The leader is required to perform work from elevated platforms, ladders, and/or man-lifts. Work areas may be located at extreme heights. Must have color vision, good hearing, and manual dexterity.

Will be asked to work in adverse weather conditions.
