Behavioral Health Specialist 3

The mission and vision of Eastern State Hospital (ESH) has at its core the support of sustainable recovery, independence and wellness in an atmosphere where people are healthy, safe and supported.

In support and service of the approximately 375 patients and their communities, the Education Services Department provides training, staff development and education to approximately 1000 ESH employees.

The BHS3 Preceptor is a critical position in supporting the hospital’s priority focus to effectively onboard new Forensic Care Associates (FCAs) and Mental Health Technicians (MHTs).

The BHS3 Preceptor provides and/or facilitates on-ward precepting and mentoring for newly hired or promoted FCA’s and MHT’s. Under the supervision of a RN3 Staff Education Coordinator, the BH3 Preceptor facilitates the FCA/MHT in-training plan/precepting and ensures timely completion of the required elements. The BHS3 Preceptor delivers classroom and ward-based training as assigned.

Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary.

This position will work a Monday-Friday, mostly dayshift schedule. However, they will be working other shifts as needed.

Some of what you'll do
  • Precept, mentor, instruct and train direct care nursing staff (FCA/MHT).
  • Facilitate and monitor the in-training plan for these employees.
  • Train and instruct content for educational courses to nursing staff throughout the hospital as assigned and as determined by the training needs of each shift and unit. As assigned, train and instruct during Nursing Orientation, annual in-services, and continuing nursing education.
  • Plan and effectively deliver quality precepting as indicated by the onboarding plan for the individual employee(s) being onboarded, applicable program requirements, required training intervals and current needs of the organization.
  • Precept, mentor, coach and instruct nursing onboarding content utilizing basic adult learning principles to engage, motivate and enhance staff learning and comprehension.
  • Provide on-demand nursing onboarding content in a small group or 1:1 format.
  • As a preceptor and role model, demonstrate effective professional communication, foster teamwork,
  • Following the completion of training, evaluate achievement of the desired outcomes based on the knowledge, skills and abilities obtained.
  • Collect data to evaluate courses and individual staff performance.
  • Effectively access the chain of command when appropriate.

Who should apply
Those with a bachelor’s degree, preferably involving a major in sociology, psychology, or another social science.

Certified Nursing Assistant or Registration as a Nursing Assistant. If the incumbent has a NAR, will obtain and maintain a NAC certification within 6 months of hire.

Qualifying education will substitute year for year for experience. Qualifying experience will substitute year for year for education.

  • In-depth working knowledge of group behavior and dynamics.
  • Experience in intervening and de-escalating crisis/dangerous situations.
  • Knowledge of all hospital, state, and federal regulatory standards, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates the principles of universal precautions and infection control practices.
  • Ability to work with difficult or angry patients in a therapeutic, non-threatening manner.
  • Ability to work as a team member and to resolve personal conflicts in a calm, non-threatening manner.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with management, peers, patients, and the public as required to carry out the assigned duties of the position.
  • Demonstrate proficient operation of the following equipment: Computer, copy machine, metal detector, vital signs tower, and patient lifting equipment.
