Job Description

Summary

This job involves training and evaluating people with disabilities, especially those with low vision, to drive safely using adaptive equipment and techniques.

The role requires traveling across West Virginia to provide hands-on instruction, assessments, and supervision to junior staff while staying updated on driving laws and vehicle modifications.

Key Requirements

  • Current active Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) certification in good standing with ADED
  • Associate's degree or higher in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Nursing, Kinesiotherapy, Therapeutic Recreational Therapy, or Exercise Physiology; OR Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Vocational Rehabilitation, Health and Physical Education, Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, Education, or Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement
  • Valid West Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to travel extensively statewide, including overnight stays
  • Pass extensive background check and routine drug/alcohol screenings; must be drug and alcohol free
  • Develop understanding of various physical, mental, visual, and emotional disabilities within 6 months
  • Provide clinical supervision to lower-level Driver Rehabilitation Specialists

Within 6 months of hire, the person in this position must be able to work with a wide variety of consumers with disabilitiesand must have and/or develop an understanding of a wide variety of physical, mental, visual and emotional disabilities.Additionally, within 6 months of hire, and under the direction of the Bioptic Driving Specialist, this individual will beginproviding classroom and behind the wheel instruction for low vision and Bioptic consumers.

This individual will travelstatewide and overnight to provide driving evaluations, behind the wheel training, vehicle modification evaluations, andprescriptive adaptive equipment recommendations.

This CDRS will also provide clinical supervision to Driver RehabilitationSpecialist 1 and Driver Rehabilitation Specialist 2.

This individual will be required to produce timely, accurate, detailedprofessional reports; maintain a knowledge of current trends and issues in driver rehabilitation through self-research andresources such as attending the ADED (The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialist) conference and other training.This person(s) will keep abreast of issues related to vehicle modifications, including following updates by NHTSA (NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration), the WV Division of Motor Vehicles and equipment vendors, and current Bioptic andLow Vision driving laws.

This person(s) will maintain good working relationships with adaptive equipment vendors, the WVDMV, field counselors and other entities involved in the client's progress towards the driving goal.

This person(s) will adhereto the State of WV rules and regulations regarding travel, expenses, and other related items.

This person will present tocommunity groups regarding our services; this may include having a basic knowledge of services outside of their primaryarea.

Additionally, this person provides other services such as review of quotes, participation in agency projects, and otherduties as assigned.

This is a year-round position; and the ability to do extensive statewide and overnight travel.

Due to thecertification requirements to be a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist, the successful candidate must have one of thefollowing degrees: An associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in OccupationalTherapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Nursing, Kinesiotherapy, Therapeutic Recreational Therapy, orExercise Physiology.

OR A bachelor's degree in social work, Vocational Rehabilitation, Health and Physical Education,Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, Education, or Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement.

Must be a current active Certified DriverRehabilitation Specialist CDRS in good standing with the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (ADED).

Theindividual's driving record will be obtained. We are a drug-free workplace. This position requires the individual to be drug andalcohol free. This position requires a valid WV driver's license.

The selected applicant must be able to pass an extensivebackground check and will be subject to routine drug and alcohol screenings.

Qualifications

Training: Must be a current active Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) in good standing with the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED).

OR

Substitution: Must have a Professional Teaching Certificate of Safety or Driver Education and ten (10) years of driving instruction to individuals with disabilities.


Special Requirements

A valid driver's license is required. Maintaining a clean driving record is necessary for continued employment. The selected applicant must be able to pass an extensive background check and will be subject to routine drug and alcohol screenings.
