This job involves leading a team to manage traffic engineering across South Carolina's roadways, ensuring safe and efficient travel through design, operations, safety programs, and emergency responses.
The director oversees budgets, staff development, and key units like traffic signals, intelligent systems, and safety initiatives.

Serves as the Director of Traffic Engineering managing complex engineering functions to safely and efficiently operate South Carolina's roadways.
Other duties include administering the Traffic Engineering budget; overseeing employee training and development; approving employee hiring, promotions, and disciplinary actions, succession planning; time keeping and payroll; and purchasing functions.
Oversees the functions of the Traffic Design Unit which establishes work zone traffic control standards and design requirements, semi-annual inspections; traffic signal standards and design; management of the Traffic Signal Maintenance Program; and the design reviews of projects including project related reviews and traffic studies which includes Design Build support.
Directs the activities of the Traffic Management program including Intelligent Transportation Systems, State Traffic Management Center, State Highway Emergency Program and the 511 Motorist Information System.
Also provides oversight for emergency traffic management during events and inclement weather in which traffic is impacted.
Oversees the activities of the Traffic Operations unit which establishes standards for all traffic control devices on South Carolina roads; prepares plans for interstate signing and marking projects; the administration of the Specific Service Signing and Tourist-Oriented Directional Sign programs; establishes the Department's access management standards; conducts and reviews traffic studies; and provides traffic analysis.
Manages the activities of the Traffic Safety unit which includes the Federal Highway Safety Program consisting of data analysis, project identification, and project design, and the State Rural Road Safety Program.
Responsible for the Department's strategic goals pertaining to Traffic Engineering related items including the development and management of a Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) program. Performs other related duties as assigned.
