The Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to serve as the Director of Internal Audit.

This position provides independent and objective assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, governance processes, and compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.

This position reports directly to the Alcoholic Beverage Services Commission.

The DABS is responsible for overseeing the sale and distribution of alcoholic products in the State of Utah.

The department is proud to serve all Utahns—supporting essential government services, strengthening local businesses and tourism, and promoting alcohol education and prevention.

Responsibilities

The Director of Internal Audit will perform a variety of office functions including but not limited to:


  • Plan and conduct internal audits in accordance with approved audit plans, public sector auditing standards, and government regulations

  • Review and evaluate financial, operational, and compliance controls across DABS divisions and programs

  • Assess compliance with applicable laws, regulations, government policies, and directives

  • Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of DABS programs

  • Identify risks, control weaknesses, and instances of noncompliance

  • Prepare clear, objective audit reports outlining findings, conclusions, and recommendations

  • Present audit results to the commission and DABS management

  • Follow-up on implementation of audit recommendations and corrective actions

  • Assist with fraud risk assessments, investigations, and special reviews when assigned

  • Coordinate with external auditors, regulators, and oversight agencies

  • Promote accountability and continuous improvement within the organization


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field or 4 years of professional audit/finance/management experience

  • Strong analytical and investigative skills

  • Knowledge of internal control frameworks and risk-based auditing

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to interpret laws, regulations, and policy documents

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across divisions

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

  • 21 years of age or older

  • Able to pass a background check

Preference(s):

  • Experience in internal audit, external audit, accounting, or public sector oversight

  • Professional certification (CIA, CPA, CISA, CGAP, or equivalent)

  • Master’s degree
