Job Description

Summary

This job is for a Desktop Support Specialist in the U.S.

Department of Justice's New Orleans office, where you'll help users with everyday computer problems, set up and fix hardware and software, and keep systems secure.

It's a good fit for someone with a couple of years of IT support experience or a relevant graduate degree who enjoys troubleshooting tech issues and assisting people in a government setting.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized IT support experience equivalent to GS-7 (for GS-9) or GS-9 (for GS-11), including installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware/software

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: specialized experience OR education.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in Federal service and must demonstrate possession of each of the following competencies: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, and Problem Solving.

Specialized experience is defined as providing IT customer support services, including assisting with installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware/software, assisting with the maintenance of internet servers and websites, supporting information security operations by monitoring systems and reporting issues, providing technical assistance to users by responding to service requests and resolving routine IT issues.

OR Education: A Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

This education must have been in one of the following fields OR included a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the following fields and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems, or networks: Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, or Technology Management.

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: specialized experience and IT-related experience OR education.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in Federal service and must demonstrate possession of each of the following competencies: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, and Problem Solving.

Specialized experience is defined as providing IT customer support services, including installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware/software and networked systems, maintaining internet servers and websites, conducting information security analysis and compliance, providing user training and assistance on a variety of applications, resolving complex IT issues, and managing web designs and legal compliance.

OR Education: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

This education must have been in one of the following fields OR included a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the following fields and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems, or networks: Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, or Technology Management.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

Serves as an Information Technology (IT) Specialist supporting the Department of Justice's information technology needs in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

As an Information Technology Specialist, you will provide technical and analytical support across a range of IT functions, supporting DOJ systems, cybersecurity, collaboration tools, and infrastructure.

Typical work assignments will include: Managing DOJ-issued desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and multifunction devices, as well as on-premises and cloud infrastructure in a Microsoft 365 hybrid Active Directory environment.

Providing Tier I through Tier III support to district users across the state using the district's ManageEngine ServiceDesk ticketing system.

Delivering training and maintaining documentation for Microsoft 365 tools (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive), Webex, and core IT processes.

Supporting the district's intranet (Drupal) and maintaining SharePoint Online communication and team sites.

Enforcing Department of Justice cybersecurity policies, managing privileged user access, and supporting two-factor authentication using Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards.

Using PowerShell, Visual Basic Scripting (VBScript), Windows shell scripting, Power Apps, and Power Automate to streamline IT operations and support policy compliance.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
