Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing medical claims to figure out which insurance should pay first, whether it's private insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid, and deciding if Medicaid claims should be paid, rejected, or sent elsewhere.

The role also includes researching insurance rules, updating processes for policy changes, and helping fix errors in the state's Medicaid computer system.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • One year of experience in administrative support equivalent to Departmental Technician 7 level

  • Experience interpreting commercial insurance and Medicare policies
  • Understanding of medical documentation and CPT procedure codes
  • Ability to conduct research and analyze primary payer coverage for claims

This position is responsible for conducting studies and research on primary resources coverage and analyzing available components to determine the Primary Payer of medical claims submitted to Medicaid for payment.

The required interpretation of commercial insurance policies, Medicare policies and regulations, and Medicaid policies is complex in nature as there are no exact written instructions that assist the technician with making the decision to pay, reject, or refer Medicaid claims.

The technician will review changes with the State of Michigan health policies and federal initiatives and revise business processes to accommodate changes.

This position will assist the monitoring and maintenance of the Medicaid Management Information System (CHAMPS) by identifying system errors and participating in User Acceptance Testing of system defects and enhancements related to edit logic changes.

Requirements

Education

Education typically acquired through the completion of high school.

Experience
Departmental Technician 7

One year of experience performing experienced-level administrative support activities equivalent to the 7-level in state service.

Departmental Technician 8

One year of experience as a technician or paraprofessional equivalent to the entry level in state service.

OR

One year of experience performing administrative support activities equivalent to the 8-level in state service.

Departmental Technician E9

Two years of experience as a technician or paraprofessional, including one year of experience equivalent to the intermediate level in state service.

OR

One year of experience performing advanced secretarial or supervisory administrative support activities equivalent to the 9-level in state service.

Qualifications

Departmental Technician 7

Completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits) may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Departmental Technician 8
Possession of a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Departmental Technician E9
Possession of a Bachelor's degree and one year of job-related experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Additional Information

The physical location of this position is 400 S. Pine St., Lansing, MI. Based on operational needs and within established limits, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests for this position may be considered.

Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely or a hybrid schedule must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.
