Job Description

Summary

This Data Scientist role at the National Institutes of Health involves using advanced computer tools and data analysis to help researchers discover new scientific insights and improve public health.

You'll work with teams across various NIH institutes to collect, process, and interpret data, then share findings through clear visuals and reports.

It's a great fit for someone with a strong background in math or computer science who enjoys applying technology to real-world health problems and collaborating with scientists.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level, including data collection, preprocessing, analysis using programming languages like R or Python, feature engineering, advanced statistical methods (e.g., MANOVA, Bayesian Analysis), and machine learning/AI tools
  • Experience implementing machine learning techniques such as NLP, Deep Learning, or Reinforcement Learning to extract insights from data
  • Proficiency in summarizing and visualizing data analysis results using tools like MATLAB or Tableau for presentations to stakeholders
  • For higher levels (GS-13/14): Experience in enhancing or designing data processes, explaining concepts to non-experts, and leading data initiatives
  • Ability to work in a federal government setting, supporting strategic goals in health research

As a Data Scientist you will be responsible for supporting the organization in meeting its strategic goals and in working with investigators to promote and apply computer methods and tools that advance scientific discovery and promote public health.

Basic Education Requirement: In order to qualify for the Data Scientist GS-1560 position, you must: A.

Possess a bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or a field that is directly related to the position; OR, B.

Possess a combination of education (at least 30 semester hours) and additional appropriate/related experience that is the equivalent to a major in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or a field directly related to the position.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing data collection, preprocessing, and analysis by applying programming languages (e.g., R, Python), feature engineering, advanced statistical methods/techniques (e.g., MANOVA, Bayesian Analysis), and machine learning/AI tools; implementing machine learning/AI tools (e.g., NLP, DP, RL) to extract insights from data; and summarizing data analysis results using data visualization tools, programming languages, and software applications (e.g., MATLAB, Tableau) to prepare presentations for external stakeholders.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: enhancing data collection, preprocessing, and analysis activities by implementing/adapting programming language codes (e.g., R, Python), feature engineering, advanced statistical methods/ techniques (e.g., MANOVA, Bayesian Analysis), and machine learning/AI tools; adapting and implementing machine learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques (e.g., NLP, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning) to extract insights from unstructured data; explaining findings using data visualization tools, programming languages, and software applications (e.g., MATLAB, Tableau); and explaining data science concepts to stakeholders (e.g., researchers, leadership) to build consensus in planning data initiatives (e.g., data collection, preprocessing, analysis, reporting).

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you qualify at the GS-14 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: enhancing data collection, preprocessing, and analysis activities by designing/implementing programming language codes (e.g., R, Python), feature engineering, advanced statistical methods/techniques (e.g., MANOVA, Bayesian Analysis), and machine learning/AI tools; designing, implementing, or evaluating machine learning/AI tools (e.g., NLP, DP, RL) to extract insights from unstructured and multidimensional data; presenting findings using data visualization tools, programming languages, and software applications (e.g., MATLAB, Tableau) to support evidence-based recommendations; and leading the design/methodology and implementation of analytical projects and studies to extract new insights from Big Data.
