To qualify for this position you must meet one of the basic requirements described below: A. Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position.

The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. OR B.

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, qualified applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12) in the Federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience is defined as: Applying professional and scientific knowledge of mathematical, statistical analysis, programming techniques, data quality reviews, critiques and methods to gather, analyze, design and construct new processes for analytical modeling, data acquisition, interpreting models, and/or reporting quantitative information, trends, relationships and correlations among or within data.

Performing data engineering and data science functions such as data acquisition, normalization, prediction, data pipeline development and optimization of data delivery processes Time-in-Grade: Current or former federal employees who have held a GS position in the preceding 52 weeks, must meet the time in grade requirement.

Applicant must have served 52 weeks as a GS-12 or higher grade in Federal Service.

** The effective date of your SF-50 must reflect that you will meet the 52-week time in grade requirement within 30 days of the announcement closing.

** You may qualify for consideration if meeting time-in grade, specialized experience, education requirement, 90 days after competitive appointment requirement, and all other qualification requirements within 30 calendar days after the closing date of the announcement, unless otherwise indicated on the announcement.

Major Duties:

  • Serves as a Data Scientist, providing professional and scientific expertise in performance of work requiring knowledge and application of mathematics, statistical analysis, programming, and/or other scientific principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Perform data engineering functionality by creating custom code (SQL/Python/Java/Jython/PySpark/Pandas/etc.), modifying and updating ingestion pipelines for data transformations and acquisition.
  • Performs data science functions by working to predict, describe and understand patterns within data.
  • Supports DFAS data ingestion operations by ingesting cyclical datasets, verifies successful ingestion, and updates existing data pipelines as required. Performs data quality reviews, develops/optimizes performance of pipelines and ingestion processes
  • Develops dashboards (Qlik or Power BI), including data visualizations and data load scripts using existing Advana data sources.
  • Collaborates with other team members to communicate obstacles and findings to relevant stakeholders in an effort to improve decision-making and drive business performance.
  • Prepares and presents briefings and makes presentations regarding the progress and/or results of projects/studies.
