Position Summary:

The purpose of the custodial work unit position is to support the university’s academic, research, residential, and public service missions by ensuring campus facilities are consistently clean, safe, sanitary, and well maintained.

This position helps provide a healthy, welcoming, and functional environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors through the routine and specialized cleaning, maintenance, and care of campus buildings and surrounding areas, while adhering to established standards, safety regulations, and institutional policies.


Job Responsibilities:

This position is 2nd shift (4:00pm - 12:30pm)

Supervision - 45% - Provides direct supervision of custodial staff to ensure effective performance and adherence to university standards. Assigns daily work tasks, establishes priorities, and monitors employee performance to ensure work is completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule. Provides clear direction and ongoing oversight to support consistent service delivery across assigned areas.

Quality Control - 20% - Ensures custodial services meet university cleanliness, safety, and appearance standards through ongoing monitoring. Conducts regular inspections of assigned work to confirm tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule. Uses inspection results and direct observation to document performance, provide feedback, identify training needs, and prepare employee performance evaluations.

Employee Training - 15% - Plans, organizes, and conducts training for custodial staff to ensure proper understanding of cleaning procedures, equipment operation, chemical use, and safety protocols. Provides onboarding and orientation for new employees, as well as ongoing instruction and refresher training for current staff. Identifies individual or group training needs based on inspections, performance evaluations, and operational requirements. Maintains training documentation.

Documents/Reports - 13% - Maintains accurate records and reports to support custodial operations and staff management using university-approved software. Reviews and approves timesheets; prepares written communications, including corrective actions; documents employee performance issues; and prepares performance evaluations. Tracks project schedules, event cleaning assignments, and cleaning deadlines. Monitors and records equipment usage, maintenance, and inventory.

Event Preparation and Special Projects - 5% - Plans, coordinates, and oversees custodial support for campus events and special projects to ensure timely and efficient completion. Provides oversight of event set-ups and teardowns, including staffing, task assignments, and quality control, to meet event schedules and university standards. Coordinates cleaning project work, including short-term and specialized projects, and manages tight turnaround timelines with short deadlines. Adjusts staffing, priorities, and work schedules as needed to respond to changing requirements while maintaining routine custodial services.

Snow Removal - 2% - Performs and supervises snow and ice removal operations to ensure safe access to building entrances, walkways, and other designated pedestrian areas during winter weather conditions. Oversees assigned snow removal staff, assigns work, and monitors performance to ensure timely and effective completion of snow and ice control activities. Performs snow removal duties as needed, including shoveling, applying approved ice melt products in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines, and removing residual materials once conditions have cleared. This work may occur outside of regularly scheduled shifts and may require availability during early mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends based on weather events and operational needs.

NOTE: Valid Driver's License needed.
