CORRECTIONS AND CUSTODY OFFICER 3 - SERGEANT
MONROE CORRECTIONAL COMPLEX
THIS RECRUITMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL PERMANENT FULL TIME POSITIONS.

The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals for the position of Correctional Sergeant at the Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC) located in Monroe, WA.The Department of Corrections (DOC), as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State.The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, Health Services Division, Communications Department and Risk Management Department.Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC) is a 1500 bed male/transgender all-custody level facility located 30 miles northeast of Seattle.
The complex consists of five major units: Washington State Reformatory Unit (WSRU), Twin Rivers, Unit (TRU), Minimum Security Unit (MSU), Sky River Treatment Center (SRTC) a large mental health inpatient treatment unit, and the Intensive Management Unit (IMU).
MCC provides care for the sickest and most complicated patients in our system and is considered the hub of medical and psychiatric care for DOC.
It is located close to University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center.

Requirements
The Correctional Sergeant (Corrections and Custody Officer 3) supervises and assists correctional officers as they perform custody work to ensure the safety and security of an adult correctional facility, unit, incarcerated individuals, staff, and the public. The incumbent will assign posts and duties to correctional officers, give instruction and training, maintain discipline, and make inspections to maintain proper safety and security. Key duties of the correctional sergeant include, but not limited too:
- Performing custody work including controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of adult incarcerated individuals.
- Supervising and assisting in the transport of incarcerated individuals, providing custody to incarcerated individuals on authorized leave for medical appointments, court orders, or other transport.
- Providing on-the-job training and monitoring completion of the on-the-job training requirements of in-training corrections and custody officers.
- Recording and evaluating officer performance.
- Assessing training needs of staff and arranging for or providing instructions.
- Taking emergency actions and intervening in/controlling acts of negative behavior and violence by incarcerated individuals by following prescribed procedures and guidelines.
- Using verbal de-escalation, physical and lethal uses of force.
- Completing written reports, keeping logs and other records.
- Ensuring incarcerated individuals, staff, and public safety by restricting mail, inspecting packages for contraband, admitting authorized visitors, and enforcing visitor regulations.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Must possess and maintain a driver's license valid in the state of Washington.
High school diploma or G.E.D
AND three (3) years' experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections.ORTwo (2) years' experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections
AND successful completion of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) hours of accredited college-level course work from a college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of Education or foreign equivalent.In addition to at least one of the above, this position requires:
- Ability to observe and strategize personal actions based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
- Ability to learn and utilize computer-based applications in the performance of job duties.
- Ability to remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervene in response to threats.
- Ability to know and apply relevant law, policy, procedure, and practice. Adhere to productivity standards and timelines established by law and policy. Identifies own training needs and proactively seeks training opportunities.
- Ability to incorporate new information into an existing framework of understanding and accepts change and supports the Agency through changes in law, policy, and procedure.
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly, factually and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to recall detailed instructions and to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrated effective oral communication skills in routine and emergent situations.
- Committed to develop and promote positive and professional interpersonal relationship skills.
