Job Description

Summary

This job involves training new and existing staff at a 911 emergency communications center on dispatching calls, using equipment, and following safety rules.

The role includes preparing lessons, checking certifications, and handling evaluations to keep everyone prepared for high-pressure situations.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with three years of communications experience in a high-volume emergency dispatch center

  • Acquire and maintain EMD certification, APCO PST1 or equivalent, and CPR certification within one year of hire
  • Pass a critical assessment test and complete the MESA communications training program
  • Ability to handle high-stress emergency situations and maintain confidentiality

Full Job Description

The purpose and mission of the Metropolitan Emergency Services Agency is to provide operation and management of the Division of Emergency Communications - 911 center, Division of Emergency Management, and the Division of Public Safety Communications - technology infrastructure to the City’s Indianapolis metropolitan areas and Marion County.

The agency is able to do this by cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the constituents of Indianapolis and Marion County.


Job Summary

The position is responsible for training new and current employees during the classroom phase and/or On Job Training, in service and remedial training as directed, administrative duties, maintaining certifications in certain fields along with receiving additional training for certifications such as APCO, CTO, NCIC, RMS, ILEA, EMD, and other programs as required to assist with training of employees.

In charge of checking all evaluations performed on employees to ensure they are being completed and scored correctly. Also, ensuring they are turned in to them in a timely manner.

Keeps in contact with the CTOs on the floor when issues arise to get the evaluations revised as needed.

Requirements

  • Responsible for training new and current employees in 911 law enforcement and/or fire dispatching, non-emergency call taking, control operations, in-service, remedial, and other areas as needed.
  • Prepares training material to follow CALEA standards, SOPs, rules and regulations, industry guidelines, new equipment, and programs to ensure all employees are up to date with policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all employees’ certifications are kept current, and all requirements are met.
  • Assists management in identifying training needs and scheduling appropriate training for employees.
  • Document and file personnel training documentation, prepare training guides and create and maintain spreadsheets. 
  • Assist with equipment testing and data entry.
  • Retrieval of information to assist with data collection from current systems.
  • Teach and evaluate trainees and remediate employees as needed.
  • Must be able to always maintain confidentiality
  • Must be able to handle high stress emergency situations

    Must be able to ensure the effective treatment of employees.

    Must be able to acquire and maintain EMD certification, APCO PST1 or department equivalent, and CPR certification within one (1) year of hire date.

    Must pass a critical assessment test and all certification courses and complete the MESA communications training program.

    Must be able to hear as well as communicate effectively, whether face-to-face, written, or telephonically in a professional and courteous manner.

    Incumbent must be able to work under extremely stressful conditions. The dispatch center is open 24 hours, seven days a week, including holidays.

    This position's shift (i.e., early, middle, or late) will be assigned based on the agency's current needs.
