About History Colorado/AmeriCorps

We are committed to serving all Coloradans and offer access to our state’s history through enriching experiences at eleven museums and historic sites, with dynamic and relevant exhibits and activities.

We steward about 15 million objects, photographs, and archival resources that make up the State’s collection, and serve tens of thousands of learners of all ages through dynamic programs.

We work with school groups and youth through field trips, day camps, and traveling programs across the state of Colorado.

We’re home to a free public research center, Colorado’s Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP), and the State Historical Fund (SHF), the nation’s largest preservation program of its kind.

The History Colorado AmeriCorps Program endeavors to address three broad areas of community need across the state: equitable K-12th grade educational outcomes, quality history educational programming, and the tools to preserve and share a more inclusive Colorado history.

Requirements

Description of Position
The History Colorado AmeriCorps Program endeavors to address three broad areas of community need across the state: equitable K-12 educational outcomes, quality history educational programming, and the tools to preserve and share a more inclusive Colorado history. This initiative is part of History Colorado's strategic goals to invest in rural prosperity, strengthen education through history, and share the diverse stories of Colorado's past. AmeriCorps members are dedicated national service participants who commit their time and skills through defined terms of service to support communities and address critical local challenges.

The AmeriCorps member will serve as part of the Education Department at the museum, working directly under the supervision of the Education Coordinator. Their primary focus will be to support and deliver high-impact educational programming to K-12 students, with an emphasis on equitable access to culturally relevant history education. The member will play a key role in facilitating Hands-on History programs, field trips, and other student focused educational experiences. As capacity allows, the AmeriCorps member may also assist with community events, adult educational programming, and broader outreach initiatives.

Terms of Service:
  • The Member will serve at the Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center.
  • The AmeriCorps Member will serve an average of 33-40 hours per week during the summer. See Calendar section for details. The AmeriCorps Member will serve a minimum of 300 hours over the course of their service term.
  • Availability between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday is required.
  • The AmeriCorps Member will be directly supervised by the Education Coordinator, with additional oversight and support provided by the Program Coordinator.
  • Service term begins May 18, 2026 and ends July 31, 2026. Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Facilitate Hands-On History out-of-school camp programming and other educational activities, delivering culturally relevant content.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to the continuous improvement of educational programming.
  • Support curriculum development and manage educational resources to ensure the successful delivery of history lessons.

Service Term Overview:
  • May 18th - July 31, 2026 (33-40 hours per week)
    • June 29th-July 3rd week off

Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident.
  • Ability to pass criminal history checks.
  • Strong interest in history, education, or a related field.
  • Must have at least three (3) months of full-time or equivalent part-time experience working with school-age children ages 5-18 OR A current early childhood professional credential level I one (1) or higher [as determined by the Colorado Department of Early Childhood based on its Early Childhood Professional Credential]

Fair Pay & Compensation: History Colorado is committed to pay equity. The posted salary range represents our good faith estimate for this role. Final offers are determined by a comprehensive salary analysis in compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, considering factors such as a candidate’s relevant experience, education, work location and internal equity.
