Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing inmate records, assigning them to appropriate programs and jobs, conducting regular interviews and progress checks, and providing counseling on their adjustment to prison life.

It requires managing a group of about 250 inmates and using computer systems to track their histories.

A good fit would be someone with experience in administration or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working in a secure facility.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody, jobs, and programs
  • Skills in interviewing inmates and recording their progress periodically
  • Experience or ability to counsel inmates on institutional adjustment and related issues
  • Proficiency in operating CRT and automated systems for accessing criminal, educational, and family history
  • Must successfully complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from officials and agencies via oral or written communication

Full Job Description

  • Evaluates inmate records to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, job assignment and treatment programs.
  • Coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conducts periodic reviews of inmates' progress.
  • Interviews inmates, discusses and records progress on a periodic basis.
  • Counsels' inmates as to their general adjustment to the institution and related problems.
  • Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries for information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operates the CRT and automated system to ascertain information pertaining to inmate's criminal, educational and family history.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree;

OR


An associate’s degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

A high school diploma and any (2) years combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
