The Office of Clinical Affairs is excited to announce the opening of the Chief Nursing Officer position within the University of South Carolina Neurological and Rehabilitation Hospital.
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO ) is a senior executive leader within the Office for Clinical Affairs and a key member of the hospital’s executive leadership team.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Clinical Affairs and serving as a peer to the Chief Operating Officer, the CNO provides enterprise-wide clinical leadership for the planning, activation, and ongoing operations of the University of South Carolina Neurological and Rehabilitation Hospital.
The purpose of this position is to design, implement, and govern the hospital’s nursing enterprise and assigned clinical service lines for a new 100-bed specialty hospital.
The CNO is accountable for clinical strategy, operational readiness, regulatory compliance, quality and safety outcomes, patient experience, workforce performance, and financial stewardship across assigned departments.
The role spans pre-opening planning and activation through steady-state hospital operations and is essential to ensuring high-quality, compliant, and sustainable clinical services aligned with the hospital’s mission and academic partnerships.
Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive healthcare leadership experience, including senior-level responsibility for nursing or clinical operations.
• Demonstrated experience leading complex clinical organizations, multidisciplinary teams, and large-scale change initiatives.
• Certification in NE-BC, NEA -BC, or CNML preferred; Certification ARN , CNRN , or SCRN preferred
• Doctoral degree (DNP , PhD, or equivalent).
• Experience with hospital startup, expansion, activation, or major clinical transformation.
• A minimum of five years of leadership experience in surgical services, perioperative services, or ancillary clinical operations.
• Leadership experience within academic medical centers or teaching hospitals.
• Formal training or certification in performance improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
• Ability to lead through ambiguity and guide organizations from early-stage development through steady-state operations.
• Ability to influence across clinical, operational, academic, and administrative stakeholders, and a sustained commitment to fostering a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, education, and research.
• Knowledge and skills with hospital startup, expansion, activation, or major clinical transformation.
• Leadership experience within academic medical centers or teaching hospitals.
• Leadership experience in surgical services, perioperative services, or ancillary clinical operations.
