Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves leading the national program for managing chemicals used in fighting wildfires on federal and state lands, including developing policies, coordinating with partners, and advising top leaders on technical and budget matters.
It's a senior role in the U.S. Forest Service focused on ensuring safe and effective use of fire retardants and suppressants.
A good fit would be someone with extensive experience in fire management or environmental programs, strong leadership skills, and the ability to work across agencies.
This position is located within the Washington Office Fire and Aviation Management (WO-FAM) and serves as the Fire Chemicals National Program Manager.
The incumbent is responsible for providing national agency leadership in support of effective management of wildland fire chemicals on National Forest lands and the lands of Federal and State agencies.

Specialized Experience Requirement: GS13: Applicants must display one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS12 grade level.
Examples of specialized experience may include: Assisting in formulating policies, plans, and programs necessary for the administration of the wildland fire chemicals program; Assisting in coordinating the integration of wildland fire chemicals with other fire management programs and interagency partners to achieve goals; Supporting agency leadership regarding technical, contract, and budget issues pertaining to or impacting the fire chemicals program.
GS14: Applicants must display one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS13 grade level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
