Full Job Description

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Integrated Service Network 6 (VISN6), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network, Durham VA Medical Center (VAMC), within the Carpentry Section of the Facilities Management Service.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/20/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Carpentry/Woodworking Operation of Equipment/Machinery Plan and organize work Use Prints and Drawings Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work includes physical exertion and must be able to lift heavy objects, walk, bend, stoop, climb, crawl and stand on foot for extended periods of time.

Works in tight and restrictive spaces such as under buildings, under equipment, in attics, in tunnels, etc., and at high elevations, such as roofs, scaffolds, ladders, in towers, etc., more than 30 feet.

Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods.

May lift and move materials up to 88 kilograms (440 pounds), unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.

Working conditions can be stressful due to working in confined and poorly ventilated areas, both inside and outside. Normally the work is performed in well-lit and heated areas.

Work conditions can consist of various weather conditions as the carpenter is deemed essential to the function of the hospital.

Various conditions may result in burns, abrasions, cuts, and working in areas that are hot, cold, damp, dusty, dirty, and potential for contact with contaminated articles.

Subject to possible injuries from falling off ladders, scaffolds, etc.

Personal protective equipment is required as each situation warrants, such as eye, hearing, head, feet and respiration protective devices.

Work includes working in the woodworking machine shop areas or other enclosed areas which are sometimes unheated.

Frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from glue, bonding chemicals, vapors, splinters, and sawdust.

To minimize or eliminate the effects of some of these conditions, the carpenter follows numerous safety practices and wears or uses various protective devices.

For example, wear protective eyeglasses or a face mask to protect against flying wooden particles; wear protective ear devices to lower noise; wear a respirator to protect against sawdust and vapors; uses machine guards to protect against cuts and loss of fingers; follow numerous safety practices in operating machines and using tools and equipment.

Some of the protective devices used by the position are uncomfortable and are worn for long periods. Major Duties:

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Responsible for the lock system and maintains all key codes and door hardware. Repairs and maintains automatic doors.

Installs fire protection door closures on all smoke doors. Preforms general maintenance. Installs floor tile requiring material for adhesion.

Repairs and replaces window guides and tapes and replaces different size window glass. Installs detention screens, acoustical ceiling suspension systems, metal stud walls, partitions and carpet.

Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
