In addition to the current opening, this recruitment may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to fill future Carpenter vacancies within the Parks Division over the next six months.


The Parks Operation Section is seeking an experienced Carpenter to join our dynamic Crafts Crew. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of our parks and facilities, ensuring they remain welcoming and well-kept for all visitors.

About the Role: A Carpenter plays a key role in maintaining and improving King County Parks facilities by performing skilled carpentry work across a wide range of structures, systems, and environments. This position supports safe, functional, and welcoming public spaces through hands-on construction, repair, and maintenance, while also contributing to project planning and coordination. Working on diverse projects—from structural builds to finish work and community volunteer initiatives—this role directly advances the Parks Division’s mission to serve and connect communities. Success in this position requires strong technical expertise, teamwork, and a commitment to equity, public service, and high-quality craftsmanship.

About the Team: The Crafts Crew is an integral part of the vibrant and expanding Parks Operations section. As a key component of the Parks division, the Crafts Crew consists of dedicated professionals who bring a diverse range of skills, including plumbing, carpentry, irrigation, electrical work, and painting. Requirements

What You Will Be Doing:

Construction, Repair & Maintenance

  • Install and repair doors, windows, and related hardware, including locking mechanisms and keying systems.
  • Maintain and repair roofs, walls, ceilings, floors, drywall, siding, and acoustical systems.
  • Repair and maintain concrete, masonry, and finish materials across park facilities and structures.

Specialized Carpentry Functions

  • Locksmith: Build, maintain, and repair doors, windows, and locking systems (mechanical and electronic), including re-glazing.
  • Cabinetmaker: Build and install finish materials such as cabinets, millwork, tile, laminate, furniture, signs, and partitions.
  • Framer/Drywaller: Construct and remodel structural components (walls, roofs, decks, etc.) and install sheathing, drywall, insulation, and related materials; provide guidance to helpers.

Tools, Equipment & Project Coordination

  • Operate and maintain carpentry tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate projects by evaluating work requests, estimating, and scheduling labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Maintain basic records, including daily logs.

Customer Service & Community Engagement

  • Provide excellent customer service and serve as a representative of the Parks and Recreation Division.
  • Participate in community carpentry and volunteer projects.
  • Supports King County’s Equity, Racial, and Social Justice goals by providing respectful, inclusive service to coworkers and community members

Qualifications

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Knowledge of the qualities, grades, uses and adaptability of various woods, wood products and related materials used in all types of carpentry
  • Journey-level knowledge of and skills in the carpentry trade
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical formulas with or without the use of a construction calculator
  • Demonstrated skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in the trade

Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to perform physical labor with weights up to 75 pounds.
  • The ability to work at ground level and roof top heights and all levels in between.
  • Must be able toto work on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions.

It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:

  • Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship (or equivalent) OR 4 or more years of journey-level experience.
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, tools, safety practices, and construction math.
  • Demonstrated experience with concrete form building and finishing.

Additional Information

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: 3005 NE 4th St. Renton, Washington – Parks Central Maintenance Facility
  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. Monday-Thursday, 5:30am-4:00pm. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Joint Crafts Council, Local Carpenters 206.
