Full Job Description

The incumbent in this position is under the supervision of the Chief, Maintenance & Operations specializing in Carpentry and also performs maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the following occupations: Carpentry, Plastering, Painting Plumbing, Electrical, and Air Conditioning.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electrical Equipment Follow Directions Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measurement and Layout Measuring Instruments Physical Strength and Agility Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major Duties:

CARPENTRY: The incumbent specializes in Carpentry and must know how to plan and measure material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.

Must have the skill to use tapes, rules, and squares accurately and to use shop tools, such as hammers, handsaws, planes, screwdrivers, power saws, and power planers.

Has a thorough knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials, and construction techniques.

They are skilled in the operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment and are able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.

The incumbents are able to interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes.

PLASTERING: Must have a basic knowledge of plastering trade practices and be able to apply commonly accepted work methods and techniques.

Must know how to prepare damaged areas to insure that the new plaster will adhere to surface and surrounding plaster.

Must have the ability to apply new plaster and finish in such a manner that it bends with the adjoining area.

PAINTING: Must have knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques.

For example, he/she must know how to remove such things as scale, rust, dirt, and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly.

Apply coating materials so that the surfaces are free from skips, runs, drips, and other assigned duties.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD00306A Physical Requirements: The duties require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, working from ladders and scaffolding and platforms, both in the outside buildings, and crawling through restrictive areas.

The incumbent must occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing fifty pounds or more with proper equipment.

Assignments may require him/her to stand, stoop, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
