Full Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Finance, the Business Center Manager oversees the daily operations of a business unit comprising multiple financial and related functional areas, ensuring timely and accurate processing of transactions and compliance with applicable regulations, policies and procedures. Incumbent supervises business center staff and maintains effective working relationships with departments served by the center, supporting a culture of exceptional customer service.

Business Center Oversight
  • Leads Business Center activities, including implementation of business plans and new policies, processes and procedures.
  • Ensures the integrity of the Center’s internal control structure.
  • Collaborates with functional areas to develop and deliver process training.
  • Provides guidance and ensures compliance with applicable institutional, state and federal regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ensures a positive working relationship between the Center and assigned units by serving as a liaison between leadership and Business Center staff.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with vendors and internal and external constituents.
Consultative Services – Financial Management
  • Develops and refines analytical reports for financial, budgetary and internal control performance.
  • Provides consultative services on business operations to deans, department heads and directors.
  • Provides input to deans, department heads and directors on strategic planning related to their business operations and direction on the creation of guidelines and policies to ensure compliance with process and reporting requirements.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of policies and guidelines across assigned departments and makes recommendations to Finance and Business Affairs leadership as needed.
  • Contributes to the establishment of university-wide business effectiveness goals/metrics and monitors and evaluates Business Center progress.
Supervision and Development
  • Supervises Business Center staff, including hiring, training, coaching and evaluating.
  • Evaluates staff workload and adjusts work assignments as needed.
Other Duties
  • Provides guidance to student employees.
  • Creates and maintains procedural documentation.
  • Serves as backup for other members of the assigned Business Center.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of finance or related experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Two years of supervisory experience (functional or direct).
  • Experience with Banner or similar integrated software system.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, aggregation formulas and lookup functions.
  • Solid understanding of basic finance, grant and human resources terminology.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and guidelines related to business practices preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal and state human resources regulations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Winthrop’s finance and human resources policies and procedures preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze data and inquiries, think critically and make appropriate decisions.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate ambiguity and adapt to continuously evolving processes in a dynamic work environment.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable rules and regulations on the disclosure of information, including those associated with HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships within and outside reporting lines.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others.
  • Sufficient technical skills to master required software.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Adobe and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Experience serving multiple units as part of a service team.
  • Relevant experience at an institution of higher education.

Additional Information

Travel/Overtime Requirements: Occasional work outside normal business hours.
