The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking multiple skilled and safety-focused Bridge Maintenance Specialist to fill vacancies in Everett, WA.

Working under the direction of a Maintenance Specialist Lead, these positions will perform journey-level maintenance, repair, and operational work on more than 1,300 bridges throughout the Northwest Region (NWR), ensuring structures remain safe, functional, and compliant with established standards.

In these roles, you will be responsible for hands-on structural and mechanical repairs, inspections, equipment operation, and collaboration with maintenance crews while contributing to a respectful, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment.

Our top candidates will demonstrate bridge or heavy civil maintenance expertise, mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and clear communication skills.


What to Expect

These positions perform work that includes the safe operation of specialized equipment such as cranes, work boats up to 50 feet in length, trucks up to 80,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) including Under Bridge Inspection Trucks (UBIT) mobile cranes and Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA).

A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday, 40 hours per week for 4, 10-hour shifts. 5:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Will be required to work nights, days, weekends, and holidays.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2s will:

  • Perform journey-level bridge maintenance and repair work including tasks involving both structural and non-structural elements.
  • Perform repairs to timber components including caps, piles, and stringers.
  • Perform bridge flushing using various equipment.
  • Clear logs and other large debris away from piers and other critical parts of the bridges.
  • Fabricate steel and aluminum components using proper tools and techniques depending on the task assigned.
  • Adhere to safety policies and maintain diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Ensure safe handling of hazardous substances and hazardous objects; engage in a safe work environment and attend safety training as required.
  • Operate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B, or C equipment for maintenance operations.
  • Perform safe operation of specialized equipment such as cranes, work boats, and trucks.
  • Perform proper use of all types of power, air, and hand tools.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Bridge Maintenance Experience: Extensive journey level experience in a trade such as construction, steel fabrication, carpentry, electrician, concrete, mechanic or millwright.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Building and Construction: Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood which includes the application of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of bridges, or other structures such as highways and buildings.
  • Engineering and Technology: Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, and the ability to apply principles, techniques, procedures, and to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Effective Communication Skills: Ability to provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone and to communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Equipment Operation Experience: Skills and experience running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles or watercraft.
  • Active Listening Skills: Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the required competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A with endorsement N without restrictions E (no manual transmission) and L (air brake), or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • The ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by.
  • The ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another safely.
  • The ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 100 feet, over land or water.
  • The ability to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather conditions.


Important Notes

  • This recruitment will be used to fill three (3) vacancies and may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • These positions are not eligible for remote work.
  • The salary listed includes a 10% Group C premium.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
