Full Job Description

In this position, the Boiler Plant Operator Supervisor must possess the skill, knowledge and experience to supervise, plan, direct, and administer high pressure steam boiler plant operations, CoGen turbine electrical generation, motor vehicle operations and Utility Systems Repair Operators of an operational unit.

The position is assigned to the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the VA Central Western Mass (VACWM) located in Leeds MA.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The physical demands of the position will be that normally required of a journeyman tradesperson.

Some heavy lifting (equipment and materials), movement of ladders required along with the stamina to perform physical labor.

Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, and lifting, arduous physical effort is required in the performance of manual tasks and continuous standing for extended periods of time when performing tasks.

Working conditions such as ventilation and environment are satisfactory. Employee may be subject to occasional noise, skin irritations, cuts, and bruises.

The work performed requires continuous walking when making inspections in the various buildings. When occasionally performing tasks, moderate effort is expended.

Must have thorough knowledge of trade techniques, materials and equipment in order to instruct employees. Work is performed inside, outside or both.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Ability to Lead or Supervise Dexterity and Safety Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Lead or Supervise Operation of Equipment/Machinery Technical Practices IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Major duties and responsibilities include: Planning and scheduling daily, weekly, and monthly work schedules and assignments for employees supervised.

Establishing deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules, methods, and procedures of the team. Explaining work requirements, methods, and procedures as needed.

Providing on-the-job training of all employees assigned to sections in appropriate trade techniques.

Must be familiar with pertinent rules and regulations regarding employees' conduct, safety, fire, care of equipment, etc.

Must be familiar with proper safety techniques and procedures so that the regular and safe functioning of the Medical Center is assured.

Responsible for the maintenance, storage and safeguard of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies for his/her area of assignment.

Responsible for instructing employees in work operations and conducts inspections of work while in progress and completed to assure that all factors are adhered to and all objectives have been met.

Makes inspections of the boiler plant, CoGen turbine and utility systems to determine whether adequate preventive maintenance and standards are being maintained.

Operating and maintaining boilers, generator, and equipment in accordance with established safety regulations. Performing other duties as assigned.
