Job Description

Summary

This entry-level biologist role at the NIH focuses on managing safety protocols for handling dangerous biological materials, ensuring labs follow federal rules for quarantines, imports, and select agents, and supporting research by processing permits and conducting inspections.

It's ideal for someone with a science background who's detail-oriented, good at compliance, and eager to work in a government health research setting.

While it mentions higher-level experience, the GS-4 grade suggests it's suited for recent graduates or those starting in federal service with basic lab knowledge.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 level, including planning research, analyzing lab data, preparing reports, using lab instruments, and developing protocols (note: adapt for GS-4 entry-level application)
  • Knowledge of federal regulations for select agents, etiological agents, and import/export of biological materials
  • Experience in laboratory safety, inspections, and compliance with biosafety standards
  • Ability to serve as a program manager or alternate official for quarantine and permit services
  • Skills in handling pathogenic bacteria, toxins, viruses, and recombinant DNA
