Full Job Description

The automotive/heavy equipment technician may be assigned to light automotive, heavy truck/equipment, or fire apparatus. Assignment is subject to change according to business needs.

The Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician is an essential role, responsible for maintaining critical labor necessary for the continued functioning of Gwinnett County fleet and apparatus. This position requires consistent, reliable attendance and may involve work during emergencies, inclement weather, holidays, or other circumstances when normal operations are disrupted. The Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician may be assigned to light automotive, heavy truck/equipment, or fire apparatus. Assignment is subject to change according to business needs.

  • The Light Automotive Technician will be responsible for preventive maintenance services, diagnosing and repairing of automobiles and light trucks to include drivability, suspension systems, brake systems, engine, and transmission.
  • The Heavy Equipment Technician will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing commercial and diesel vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery to include troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, reading and understanding hydraulic and electrical schematics, troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines (Cat, Cummins, Detroit), and maintaining routine maintenance schedules on all heavy equipment.
  • The Fire Apparatus Technician will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing fire apparatus to include troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, reading and understanding hydraulic and electrical schematics, troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines (Cat, Cummins, Detroit), and maintaining routine maintenance schedules.

    Enhances schedules on all Fire Equipment.


    Hiring Salary Range
    • Level I: $41,432.00 - $64,219.00 ($19.92 - $30.87/hour) - Grade A13(3)
    • Level II: $44,968.00 - $71,948.00 ($21.62 - $34.59/hour) - Grade B21(3)
    • Level III: $53,286.00 - $85,258.00 ($25.62 - $40.99/hour) - Grade B23(3)

    For eligible employees, Fleet Management will provide skills evaluation, preparation and funding for ASE certification/re-certification in accordance with County policies.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Level I:
    • High School Diploma or G.E.D
    • Valid driver's license
    • Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months according to area of assignment
    • 6 months automotive or heavy truck/equipment experience
    • Must be able to work four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri)
    • Schedule is subject to change according to business needs
    Level I is eligible for promotion to Level II upon obtaining the appropriate qualifications (see below).

    Level II:
    • High School Diploma or G.E.D
    • Four (4) years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles
    • Valid driver's license
    • Four (4) ASE certifications in area of assignment OR
    • Any combination of verifiable industry or manufacturer specific certifications will be considered, at the department's discretion, in lieu of ASE Certifications when applicable. ASE Certifications will be required within 12 months of employment
    • Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months according to area of assignment
    • A/C Recycle Recovery Certificate within 90 days of employment
    • Must be able to work four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri)
    • Schedule is subject to change according to business needs

    Level III:
    • High School Diploma or G.E.D
    • Five (5) years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles
    • Valid driver's license
    • ASE Master certification in area of assignment OR
    • Any combination of verifiable industry or manufacturer specific certifications will be considered, at the department's discretion, in lieu of ASE Certifications when applicable. ASE Certifications will be required within 12 months of employment
    • Refrigerant License within 90 days of employment
    • Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months according to area of assignment
    • Must be able to work four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri)
    • Schedule is subject to change according to business needs

    Other Job Requirements/Information
    • This job is safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
    • This job may require on-call rotation according to area of assignment.
