Full Job Description

This position is located within the Facility Management Service at the Martinsburg, WV VAMC.

As an Automotive Mechanic performing tasks involving troubleshooting, repairing, and/or overhauling major components.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/04/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work is frequently performed in the field without shelter and in awkward positions. Injury hazard is higher than in most grounds' trades.

A high degree of manipulation and muscular effort is required and is higher than in most grounds' trades.

The incumbent must be in good health and physical condition; the incumbents work is walking, standing, bending, and stooping and subject to discomfort from periods in the sun, chilly or rainy weather.

Also physically subject to strains from lifting heavy pieces of equipment, parts, and tools. Major Duties:

Duties include but are not limited too the following: Perform snow removal and mowing. Responsible for a fleet of vehicles and buses. Also responsible for all fleet vehicle maintenance.

Work on gasoline and diesel motorized grounds maintenance equipment and systems. Responsible for the maintenance and service for onsite diesel generators, also the repair of, trouble shooting.

and adjusting of electrical and pneumatic controls. Use of skills to make repairs, adjustments, and overhaul to hydraulic units, stationary and portable.

Minor overhaul includes totally rebuilding or replacing numerous mechanical and / or electrical components of equipment or vehicles.

This may include engines, transmissions, AC / heating systems, drive axles and transfer cases, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, steering systems, and body / structural frame components.

The type of engines involved is both two-cycle and four-cycle, normally aspirated, rotary-blower super-charged and turbo-charged diesel engines, and two-cycle and four-cycle gasoline engines.

Classes and types of equipment worked on involves but is not limited to (a) stationary power generators; (b) stationary air compressors; (c) portable (trailer mounted) power generators; (d) portable (trailer mounted), air compressors; patient transportation vehicles described as Van Body Handicapped Patient Vehicles, panel trucks and passenger buses.

Required to operate vehicles including test driving after maintenance work and pick up and deliver of vehicles that require a CDL license.
