Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting, repairing, and maintaining the FBI's fleet of vehicles in Los Angeles to keep them ready for use, including diagnosing issues, performing fixes, and ensuring they meet safety and legal standards.

It covers everything from routine checks on brakes and air conditioning to more advanced work on hybrid and electronic systems.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience as a mechanic who enjoys problem-solving, working with technology, and coordinating with teams or vendors.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 for GS-9 level, including vehicle maintenance, inspections of anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, and anti-theft devices, and using diagnostic computer programs
  • For GS-11 level, one year of experience equivalent to GS-9, including work on hybrid vehicles, drive assistance, air bags, electronic systems, and vehicle networks
  • Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and preparing vehicles for fleet integration
  • Ability to maintain liaison with internal customers and external vendors to resolve issues and gather information
  • Skills in reviewing technical data, warranties, and industry trends to recommend cost-effective solutions
  • Familiarity with diagnostic scan tools or nationally recognized certification in automotive repair (degree optional; experience can substitute)

Full Job Description

The Automotive Mechanic is responsible for different phases of vehicle maintenance, from initial inspection and diagnosis, to coordinating and administering different types of repairs.

An associate or bachelor's degree can be used for this position; however, candidates must have experience in the automotive repair/maintenance field or nationally recognized certification in diagnostic scan tool familiarization.

GS 9: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS 7 grade level.

SE is: Performed vehicle maintenance and inspections to include anti-lock brakes, air conditioning systems, and anti-theft devices.

Performed operational assessments of vehicles using computer programs and diagnostic systems.

Maintained liaison with internal customers and external vendors to gain information, answer questions, and resolve problems.

Reviewed and analyzed information and documents related to vehicle warranties, services, and supplies. GS 11 : Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS 9 grade level.

SE is: Performed vehicle maintenance and inspections to include hybrid vehicles, drive assistance systems, air bag systems, electronic systems, vehicle networks and communication systems.

Diagnosed, troubleshoot, and inspected vehicles for assimilation into a Fleet. Reviewed and analyzed technical data to maintain vehicular and non-vehicular equipment.

Maintained liaison with internal customers and external vendors to gain information, answer questions, and resolve problems.

Research industry trends and made recommendations to improve cost effectiveness of work proposed. A DEGREE IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE CAN BE USED IN LIEU OF A DEGREE FOR THIS POSITION. Major Duties:

Responsible for maintaining the operational readiness of the automotive fleet and related equipment.

Inspects, tests, and performs, corrective actions, and prepares new vehicles for assimilation into the Fleet.

Conducts technical research, obtains additional facts, determines past equipment performance and previous correction actions; determines if the current problem warrants immediate corrective actions; and evaluates the actions for cost effectiveness and technical efficiency.

Ensures assigned vehicles are operational in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. Ensures appropriate registration to include tags, titles, and any necessary State inspections are completed.
