Full Job Description
The St. Louis County Department of Transportation and Public Works is looking for an experienced individual to become an Automotive and Equipment Mechanic II. This position will perform skilled automotive maintenance and equipment repair on County owned or leased light vehicles and guide fellow employees to enhance their skills.
The typical starting salary range is between $28.70 - $34.44 hourly depending on the candidates' qualifications and experience.Additionally, we offer a comprehensive benefits package and a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) policy. Each snow season Department employees that are required (as defined by their job description) to work snow will receive a $6 per hour increase when they report for emergency snow removal services.

Requirements
Essential Function Examples
Lead lower level worker performing skilled automotive maintenance and equipment repair.
Perform inspection, maintenance and preventive maintenance and repair gas- and diesel-powered vehicles.
Perform welding repairs and light sheet metal fabrication.
Provide mentoring and cross training to lower level workers to further their skill and knowledge base.
Marginal Function Examples
Provide customer service by scheduling vehicle and equipment for repair and pick up.
Monitor and obtain supplies and equipment to ensure the availability of inventory.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Perform assigned duties during mandatory snow shift.
Qualifications
Equivalent to technical training and five years of automotive and equipment repair at the master mechanic level, including one year in a supervisory or lead mechanic role.
Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above.
Responses provided to the interview questions listed under the Supplemental Question heading of this posting will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. Once questions are scored, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
