Join our dynamic team at the Enterprise Services Section (ESS) within the Solid Waste Division (SWD) as an Assistant Accountant!

In this exciting role, you’ll be an integral part of the ESS – Financial Services Unit (FSU), offering crucial financial support across all lines of business within the Solid Waste Division.

You’ll have the opportunity to interact with both internal and external customers, all while thriving in a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive work environment that truly values your contributions.

This position plays a key role in supporting DNRP Solid Waste’s mission to unite the best talent and deliver exceptional value to our customers and stakeholders.

You’ll be part of a team dedicated to continuously improving waste prevention, resource recovery, and waste disposal – making a real impact on the environment and the community!

We are filling one (1) temporary position with a duration of up to two years.

This position will either be a Term-limited Temporary (TLT) for external candidates or Special Duty Assignment (SDA) for eligible internal candidates.

We may also use this recruitment to create a list of candidates for any potential vacancies as Career Service, TLT, and SDA positions over the next 6 months.

About this Role:In this role, you'll take charge of key financial functions, including reviewing A/P to ensure pinpoint accuracy, managing month-end and year-end accounting processes with precision, and reconciling financial data from various systems to maintain seamless operations.

You'll also be responsible for preparing financial documents that not only comply with regulatory standards but also adhere to the highest accounting principles, ensuring transparency and integrity at every step.

About the Team:The King County Solid Waste Division (KCSWD) is at the forefront of transforming waste management in our region, serving the communities of unincorporated King County and most cities within the county.

As the lead agency driving the Zero Waste of Resources (ZWoR) initiative, KCSWD is on a mission to reduce the amount of valuable materials sent to landfills by up to 70%.

The division operates vital facilities like the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, ten transfer stations, nine closed landfills, and a variety of innovative programs aimed at eliminating waste and pollution, keeping materials in use, and regenerating our natural systems for a sustainable future.

You’ll be working closely with a Supervisor who encourages continuous improvement and fosters a positive, inclusive work environment.

Requirements

What You Will De Doing:

  • Work directly with the Point-of-Sale System to manage dump cards issued to customers.
  • Ensure dump cards are distributed to the correct transfer stations based on Material Types.
  • Maintain accurate Material Types and processed dump cards to improve customer experience at Transfer stations.
  • Support Scale Operators by preventing billing discrepancies through accurate dump card setup.
  • Perform onsite visits to Bowlake Transfer Station weekly to oversee dump card processes.
  • Assist in reviewing and approving Invoice Requisitions and King County Expense Reports.
  • Ensure proper review and approval to facilitate timely payments to Suppliers and Vendors, many of which are part of the local community.
  • Provide support for day-to-day workflow, offering relief to the AP & AR Section based on workload volume

Qualifications

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Demonstrated work experience in the finance/accounting field or the equivalent education and work experience to be able to perform the duties of the position
  • Demonstrated work experience using an automated financial and reporting system
  • Intermediate level experience with MS Excel (i.e. pivot tables, csv data downloads/uploads, vlookups, etc)
  • Intermediate level experience with MS Teams, Outlook, Word and Adobe Pro
  • Demonstrated experience in a customer service role using strong interpersonal skills; working with internal teams and external partners

It Would be Great if You Also Brought:

  • Accounting Degree and 2 years’ experience working in governmental accounting/finance
  • 3+ years’ experience with automated financial and reporting systems
  • 2+ years’ experience in a Customer Service-Related role, preferably in an Accounting/Finance Role.
  • Advance experience with MS Excel.

Additional Information

Working Conditions:

Remote and Onsite Work Details: The FES team works in a hybrid model, with days in the office as well as telecommuting.

The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. The primary onsite location is King Street Center, 201 S. Jackson, Seattle, Washington 98104.

Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.

The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment.

Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Teamsters 117 Professional and Technical.
